Pinned topic Installing RHEL 6.5 on GPT drive

‏2014-07-11T07:42:44Z |

I have a trouble about installing RHEL 6.5 on my PowerLinux server.

My server has 4TB RAID5 volume (1.2TB HDD x 5) and I installed RHEL 6.5 after making GPT label.

Installation seems to be successful, but Open Firmware can't find the drive, so RHEL don't boot.

I have confirmed this symptom occurs if the server has less than 2TB drive. with GPT label.

Is anyone who succeeds in installing RHEL 6.5 on GPT drive?

My procedure is as follows.

1. Boot the server as Linux rescue mode

2. In the shell, run parted and "mklabel gpt" command

3. Reboot and install RHEL 6.5 with customized partition setting

Thanks in advance.

I believe booting with GPT label on RHEL6.5 (ppc64) is not supported yet.. ?

      Hi wrt,

I found the errata about yaboot as follows which I confirmed this errata is included in RHEL 6.5 media.

      https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2013-1561.html

Isn't this errata for my symptom?

        Hi Unicorn,

I went through  BZ#947101 which is mentioned in errata..

I found out that this update was for to support GPT partitions (does not show any signs of booting GPT)

        Regards,

          Hi wrt,

          Sorry for this late reply.

The bugzilla you mentioned might not fix my problem. So I need to call a support...

What model of PowerLinux server do you have? Firmware support for booting from a GPT disk is only available on Power 8 systems at this time.

              Brian,

Thank you very much for your comment.

My server is PowerLinux 7R1. I'll try it on POWER8 servers if I have a chance.

                Hi All,

                Power8 hit the same problem.

In the environment of RHEL6.5 for Power8, it solved it by the following.

parted bug fix and enhancement update

                https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2014-1450.html

                * This update adds support for GUID Partition Table (GPT) disk labels on PreP
partitions on the 64-bit PowerPC architectures. (BZ#1054283)
