Pinned topic db2 10 Windows 7 64bit db2start fails

‏2013-10-30T15:01:04Z |

Hi All,

I get the following when I try to start DB2 from the Services control panel:

Windows could not star the DB2 - DB2COPY - DB2-0 service on Local Computer.  Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

'db2diag -lastlines 30' does not show anything from today.

The Windows event view does not show any useful information.

This instance DID start previously.

Does anybody have any idea of what else I could look at?

Thanks,

Robert

From which user are you trying to start the DB2 service.  In services.msc who is the owner for db2 service ?

    HI Kiran,

    Thanks for responding.

db2admin is the owner, and the password is non-expired and current.  In other words, I can log into db2admin with the password that is in the services control panel.  Additionally, I would expect to see some 'invalid login error' in db2diag, but I do not.

    Thanks!

    Robert

    Hi Kiran,

Yes.  I logged out of 'Administrator', logged in as 'db2admin', and tried 'db2start'.  Same result :(

Can you please let us know how you managed to solve the problem ?

I faced the same one and could only solve it by restoring a snapshot of the DB2 server.

    Thank you

I am currently working with DB2 teams and will update this post when I have anything definitive.

    Hi Robert,

Some more details that may assist the DB2 team.   I have just experienced the same error in starting DB2.  In my case, i have moved the image from a windows host machine to a Mac so the change is from vmware workstation to vmware fusion.

If the image is moved to any other windows host machine  - it is fine!

    Thanks,

    Nitesh

    Hi,

The DB2 team just did an install on a PC with a Haswell chip.  No issues.  They (the DB2 team) are saying it must be a VMware issue.

I am continuing conversations with VMware and will let you know when I find out more.

    Regards,

    Robert

I have the exact same issue. I have a VM that is known to work in VMWare Workstation for Windows, but I can't get it to work in VMWare Fusion. My DB2 instance fails with the message: "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly."

For reference, there's a similar thread on the VMWare forums: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/461857

    Has anyone found any clues?

Hey Gordon!  Good to see you again.

I'm running into your exact same problem, I think.  I have a brand new Late 2013 Macbook Pro running VMWare Fusion 6.02, and DB2 just fails to start.  It always crashes when I try to start it.  This happens on 3 vmware images, all of which have been known to work on other machines, including my older 2010 Mac.  I'm thinking I may have to return this Mac for now :(

Good to hear from you Nguyen-Anh. Yeah that's a bummer. Luckily I have access to a cloud server, and my primary need isn't to show demos at this very moment. Otherwise, I'd be screwed too. FYI, I am told that some tech sellers from IBM have been working with VMWare to diagnose the issue, so there is hope for the future!

Good news! Someone on the VMWare forums solved this issue. The short of it is the issue is fixed if you add the following to your vmx file:

    monitor_control.enable_fullcpuid = TRUE

    cpuid.4.4.eax = "0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000"

Gordon, Great to see you out here.  I was talking with Nguyen-Anh about this problem a few days ago, trying to track it periodically, and just today found the same VMWare Discussion Thread Forum post that you shared above.

Here is the slightly more detailed explanation of what's going on a little earlier in that thread, in case anyone wants a quick link to the backstory: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2349181#2349181

Gordon, I hope you are doing well and all have a great day!

Thanks to everyone for helping out here!  Well I returned the Mac a few weeks ago... but I think I'll re-order one now :)
