Pinned topic ISA 5 Beta 3 issues with GCMV and MA tools

‏2013-05-30T03:05:26Z |

Hello,

I just installed ISA 5 Beta 3 on RHEL 6.0 64 bit. I am having problems with two tools: Garbage Collection and Memory Visualizer (GCMV) and Memory Analyzer [Desktop]. Each tool has the same issue. I can launch the tools and they start up OK in Java Web Start. However, when I try to load a GC log or heap dump into the respective tools, each tool becomes unresponsive after I browse for the file and click OK.

Other tools, such as HeapAnalyzer and TMDA [Desktop] work OK.

Has anyone seen the same behavior?

Joe

    Hi Joe,

I reproduced this problem using GCMV 2.7 desktop edition with ISA 5 Beta 3. Both ISA and GCMV were running on the same RedHat Linux 5.9 system. I opened a defect to investigate the problem.

    Regards,

    Russell

    Hi Joe,

This problem is the same as one described in the ISA 5 Beta 2 release notes. The description of the workaround was removed from the Beta 3 release notes because the problem was identified as specific only to 32-bit. I've asked that the online version of the Beta 3 release notes be updated to include the instructions.

Here's the description and solution that should solve the problem you reported.

Launching the desktop versions of Health Center, Memory Analyzer and Garbage
Collection and Memory Visualizer (GCMV) on a Linux system must be done
from the command line.  Before launching from the command line the following
      system property must be set:

      JAVAWS_VM_ARGS=-Dswing.defaultlaf=javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel

Once the JAVAWS_VM_ARGS property is set the desktop tool may be launched using
the javaws command from a 1.6+ JRE.

      To launch Health Center:
      javaws https://<host>:<port>/com.ibm.java.diagnostics.healthcenter.jws/launch.jnlp

      To launch Memory Analyzer:
      javaws https://<host>:<port>/com.ibm.java.diagnostics.memory.analyzer.jws/launch.jnlp

To launch Garbage Collection and Memory Visualizer (GCMV)
      javaws https://<host>:<port>/com.ibm.java.diagnostics.visualizer.jws/launch.jnlp

Note that the protocol is https and that the default port number is 10943.

Note also that if you're running the tools on a Linux desktop you need to set the DISPLAY environment variable (e.g., 'export DISPLAY=:1').

I have tried to launch GCMV as you say, but I received the following error:

          at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:738)

      Can you help with this?!!!

        Hi Joao,

I corrected a typo in the instructions and made some other slight modifications related to Beta 3's support for https. Here's an example for the GCMV desktop tool running on a Linux system with ISA 5 Beta 3 running on a host named 'isaserver' with a default configuration.

        javaws https://isaserver:10943/com.ibm.java.diagnostics.visualizer.jws/launch.jnlp

        Regards,

        Russell

Now, it is working. I don't need to export DISPLAY variable in Red Hat Linux 6.4, maybe it is already done in default profile.

Thanks very much for your help.
