Billy Newport recently posted his presentation "Enterprise NoSQL: Silver Bullet or Poison Pill?" on InfoQ. He gave the presentation at Strange Loop 2010 last October. I highly recommend watching it if you haven't already - or perhaps even watching a second time.
You might suspect that this talk has a forgone conclusion that NoSQL (Not Only SQL) is always the right choice, but that isn't the focus of the talk. So what is it? It is a very fair, frank, and practical talk about the differences between NoSQL and SQL solutions, and how to know which technology is the right choice for your environment. This is a "must view" presentation for anybody considering converting an Enterprise SQL application to leverage NoSQL or beginning a new NoSQL project. Billy does an excellent job of spelling out the benefits, pitfalls, and paradigm shifts that are necessary when considering such an undertaking. Depending on your situation, a NoSQL solution using WebSphere eXtreme Scale may be just what the doctor ordered. But as with any prescription, if taken for the wrong aliment or applied incorrectly it may not improve the condition and may even do more harm than good. It is certainly worth watching.
