Raise your hand if you still have a “real” office anywhere in an IBM office building. This means you have pictures of your friends, pets, and family on an IBM issued desk. You might even have a (gasp!) whiteboard on the wall with some kind of course design drawn on it. For those of you sitting on your hands, please read on.
In my 15 years with IBM, I have never had an office at an IBM facility. I have used mobile offices and borrowed space from my co-workers, but never have my elbows graced an IBM desk. If I did have my own IBM office, I would be willing to bet that it might look like a thousand other IBM offices.
This got me thinking…what do our workspaces look like? I thought I would share mine with you. I have bounced around our house. I started off in the basement for four years, then moved to the kitchen table for another couple of years. It took me six years, but I finally grew up and got an office with a door (my wife graciously moved her work area elsewhere). I have to say, I rather like my office. It is mine and I get stuff done here. And the coffee is cheaper than going to Starbucks.
What does your office look like? I will bet it bears no resemblance to a standard issue cubicle or office. Let us in the door and share a picture or two of your workspace. Go ahead and clean off the Snickers wrappers and Starbucks cups. Dust off the printer and take out the trash. Inquiring minds want to know…what’s in your office?
