Using wcs_encrypt Utility to Verify your Passwords
In a WebSphere Commerce environment, it is normal for passwords to be changed at regular intervals based on the business requirement. If you are changing your Administrative Security (WAS Admin) password or database password, you should make these changes in the Configuration Manager to ensure the Commerce instance gets updated with the new credentials.
If the Commerce instance is not updated, you often won't see any issues until you try to apply maintenance. For example, when applying maintenance, we export the Commerce EAR to a temporary directory, apply the maintenance and then redeploy the EAR.
The exportEar ANT target will fail with a message complaining about insufficient or empty credentials if the Commerce instance does not have the correct password.
If you are using the default encryption (Triple DES), it's pretty easy to check these using the wcs_encrypt utility; here's a quick example to verify the DBA and DBUser passwords.
If you are using FP9, FEP8 or higher, you may be using a properties file to store your encrypted passwords to use with the Commerce utilities.
The instructions provided above can also be applied to updating those passwords or you can refer to the Changing config_ant utility password properties file document for an example of changing a password properties file.
