WCM 7.0 Feature Discussion By Request : Folders

One of the bigger features (in terms of impact) coming in v7 is the introduction of user defined folders. Users can now create folders within the Authoring Template, Presentation template and Component sections of their libraries and start to layout their items in the most logical way that makes sense to them. Importantly it also means that more levels of inherited security can be defined by setting permissions directly on the folder to grant additional permissions or to block inheritance and restrict access to folder items.
Through the authoring UI you can find folders within the "Library Explorer" (the view that shows you exactly what you have in your repository). If you have access to create any item type within any library you will be granted the option to create a folder though you will still need at least "Contributor" access to the target location before you will be able to save your new folder. Folders can be seen and created via WebDAV as well.
An interesting option that can be seen in the explorer is the option to group folders at the start of the view (to aid in navigating around) or to see the view in its natural order (defaulting to sorting by title). This option is also seen in the Content section of the explorer for Site Areas.
Come back later for more on the wonderful world of filtering.
