Site Area Templates are a new feature in the latest WCM beta. You can now use site area templates to define the properties, workflow, security and elements of your site areas, in the same way that you could do so for content in version 6.0 and 7.0.
The diagram shows how to create a site area template in the beta:
Once you've created a site area template, you can then create a site area with the template:
Additionally, site areas themselves have a new property called 'rendering behavior'. When the site area is rendered, it can render the default content, as it does in version 6.0 and 7.0, or it can render the site areas directly, without the need to set up default content for the site area. Since site areas now have an authoring template, the template mappings can be used to map the site area's authoring template to a presentation template, and this presentation template will be used to render the site area directly. This simplifies web site creation, since default content does not need to be created for each site area.
In combination, these features mean that site area behave much like content, making creation and managing of your web site easier than ever.
