Social media generates human telemetry. And that telemetry can be used to solve the most significant challenges our planet faces. So says Graham Mackintosh in this presentation on the increasing role of social media analytics. The information we generate through blog posts, Tweets, on Facebook and through other social media channels can be combined with system telemetry from sensors and other instruments to create deeper insights on which to make fundamental decisions.
Graham talks of the case of India where the explosion in the number of cars on the road presents very particular urban growth challenges. Throw in some pretty hairy seasonal fluctuations (such as a monsoon) and you have a situation where heavy congestion (albeit at different points) becomes the norm. Social media analytics can be used to locate hotspots and inform decisions around urban planning and traffic management.
