Blogging tips from publishing expert Susan Visser

Susan Visser is a publishing expert for IBM’s Information Management brand. I caught up with her recently at Information On Demand and asked her to share some of the tips that makes her one of the top 20 bloggers on developerWorks (we have over 800).
So, how does she find out what are the hot topics to focus on? She subscribes to a number of newsletters which she uses to source blog content. Each post focuses on a particular subject, but she will tie together ideas and link out to relevant books and sources. She will also talk about webinars and business partner activities which may be useful to her audience.
She tries to blog daily, but averages around three posts a week. This is quite a feat considering that she has been blogging for around 7 years. Susan suggests that the frequency is important: if you blog regularly, people will come back to check out what you say. You do however, need to prompt people to follow your blog, by making it clear how they can sign up to be informed of updates (eg. via Twitter, RSS, etc.).
In terms of the logistics, Susan interestingly uses Google Docs to craft her posts (avoiding the extraneous tags produced by tools like MS Word), and then cuts and pastes from here into the blog editor. She did point out that images need to be uploaded and linked to separately.
In terms of the developerWorks platform, Susan makes use of the Minimal template and says that a big advantage of being on developerWorks is the fact that the pages and tags have been search engine optimized so she can be found easily. The platform publishes the visits for each post, which Susan uses to gauge the popularity of her content.
