The Management 500: A High-Octane Formula for Business Success, Dan uses the metaphor of racing car driving to help us learn how to think smarter, plan smarter, team smarter and ultimately work smarter. He opens chapter one "Prepare with Precision" with the following quote from Enzo Ferrari "I am mainly interested in promoting new developments. I should like to put something new into my cars everyday - an inclination that terrifies my staff. Were my wish in this respect to be indulged, there would be no production of standard models at all, but only a succession of prototypes." Enzo Ferrari's passion was precision. He wanted every part of his organization dedicated to increasing precision in the execution of every detail. Dan goes out to point out that Enzo said "All odds and ends of technical information are of interest to builders of racing cars, because a secondary detail can sometimes give a clever engineer a lead to something much more important. The heat of a spark plug, the type of fuel used, the kind of steel used for valves, the address of this or that supplier, together with an infiity of other details, are all useful".
As I've now learned from Dan, Enzo Ferrari had a profound impact on the world of professional auto racing. After racing cars and serving as a mechanic for Alfa on the highly successful Alfa Romeos in the 1920s and 1930s, Enzo Ferrari started his business in 1946 at the age of forty-eight and concentrated all his efforts on building his own car. Over the last 60 years, the name Ferrari has become synonymous with extraordinary speed and winning. The Ferrari car debuted at the first Formula I Grand Prix World Championship in 1950, and over the next 60 years, Enzo Ferrari and the teams that followed him won championships in 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1964, 1975, 1977, 1989, 2000-2004, and 2007.
