Who Put That Bubble In The Kool-Aid?
John Heilemann's in New York mag 'splainin' how New York just doesn't get Silicon Valley, even suggesting that there's a little bit of Valley Envy in all this New Yawk Bubble 2.0 tawk. One of Silicon Valley's esteemed scribes and historians observes that most of the Bubble talk is emerging on the East Coast, and that those in the Valley point out that the ebb and flow of capital, even at the extreme margins, is just business as usual. What's a couple of billion dollars among friends? Quoting Netscape, Loudcloud, and Ning founder Marc... [More]

Go Rocky Sox!
First things first. The World Series begins tonight in Boston. Oh, what I would pay to be a fly on the Green Monster at Fenway Park. The new kids on the block (the Colorado Rockies) visit the tradition-laden Red Sox. Although, I'm in a bit of a quandary as to who to root for. Remembering that at heart, I'm a Yankees, Astros, and Rangers fan (in that order). And remembering that I'm also a big American League booster. But also remembering that I love to see the game evolve and think it's very exciting that the Rockies are playing their first... [More]

Information on Demand Conference 2007 -- Day 5: Wired's Chris Anderson Leads The Roundtable: Innovation From The Outside In
Thursday, October 18, 2007, 9:40 AM PST Information On Demand 2007 is wrapping up pour moi. I'll be on the plane and on my way out of Vegas this afternoon. : ( Sad smiley face, I know. But before I flee back to Austin, I had one last opportunity to tune in to some key themes emerging from the conference at this morning's panel discussion led by Wired magazine editor-in-chief, Chris Anderson. The official conference mantra this week has been "Act. Right. Now." No doubt, it compels a certain sense of urgency, and Anderson kicked off this... [More]

TechMeme: Is There Anybody Out There?
Robert Scoble said that the Guardian is reporting there ain't a whole lot of people hangin' out at TechMeme. That whenever he gets a story posted there, he only gets between 500 to 3,000 visits. Wah. RoughType's Nick Carr, on the other hand, is a self-admitted TechMeme junkie, and guesses that "Techmeme must have a fairly modest, if rabid, audience. The pageviews are probably pretty high, but the unique visitor count is probably much lower." Dude, don't burst my Internet bubble. What am I gonna tell my mom? That all... [More]

IBM CoScripter: Automating Your Internet Experience
Our Almaden Research Center and alphaWorks Web tech incubator have unveiled a new free (keyword: free) and easy-to-use online service for recording and repeating step-by-step processes that Web users do on a regular basis. Think macros for the Intertubes. The hypothesis that led to the technology goes something like this: You do the same things over and over again on the Web (visiting certain pages, conducting searches, etc.), why not figure out a way to automate that? That's where "CoScripter" comes in (Hey, we're IBM. We do good... [More]

Following TechCrunch 40 Online
If you weren't able to score a ticket to the TechCrunch40 Conference being held out in California today and tomorrow, it's gonna be okay. This will probably be one of the most blogged Web 2.5-3.0-ish like events you'll ever witness. You can start by following the action on the official site. If you have no clue what I'm talking about, the backstory is this: Forty of the hottest new startups from around the World Wide World are going to announce and demo their products over a two day period (today and tomorrow) at an event called... The CNN/YouTube Debates: Why the New and Old Media Don't GoiTogether So Well
I was really looking forward to the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate last night. It seemed like it could be a perfect combination. Old media meets the new. Detente on the great stage of digital media convergence. The best of breed, where the candidates would be forced to listen to the people, then speak directly back to them. One-to-many, and many-to-one. It was not to be. Start with the depixellation of demoing YouTube-sized videos on the massive audience video screens. The impact of the questioners' often very... [More]

Homer Simpson Heads For Wall Street
Only moments ago, the Dow climbed over the 14K peak for the first time. I'm still waiting to hear if they'll make it without any oxygen, which of late seems to have mostly disappeared from the scene. 'Cuz they say two thousand zero zero party over Oops out of time So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999. While the market looks to new heights, and the Webosphere looks for the oxygen bottle, the search market has been looking for its own new percentage gains. Yesterday, comScore released its monthly comScore qSearch analysis... [More]

Innovating Africa
Before I leave town for a few days' vacation and go radio silent the rest of the week, I wanted to leave you with a post about the kind of initiative that makes one proud to work at IBM. In Africa today, there are more than 4 billion people who live on less than $5 U.S. per day. Eighty percent of the 20 lowest per capita income countries on the planet are in Africa. Africa has the world's fastest-growing and youngest population around the world, and has access to a treasure trove of natural resources. But as IBM South Africa general... [More]

Digg Digs A Big Hole
They may have been protesting U.S. immigration policy in the streets of Los Angeles and other major cities around the country yesterday, but there was also a major protest going on in the online news community. No, not the News Corp announcement of its intent to buy Dow Jones. I'm talking about the protest on Digg. If you haven't used Digg to get news online, let me help you lift up that rock, dust you off, and crawl out from under it to find out's been going on in the world. Digg is all about people sifting out and popularizing... [More]
