What a difference a day makes. This morning, Oracle announced (again) it was going to buy BEA ...this time for $8.5B (last time they offered $17/share, this time $19.375...you do the math). Sun announced it was going to buy MySQL, the open-source database, for $1B. Twitter is back up and running after getting slammed by the virtual MacWorld crowd trying to spread the good news of the MacBook Air yesterday, although the Twitterati are shaking their finger and threatening mutiny. DB2 V 9: The Database Formerly Known As Viper
We announced today our new and improved database, DB2 9 (the database formerly known as "Viper." Although we never had a really cool Sanskrit symbol to visually represent it or anything). But being a big proponent of time-shifting and creating a more intelligent interlock and filtering mechanism between digital cable and the Web, I couldn't help but mention "MeeVee" which I recently stumbled across. MeeVee positions itself as a TV search company (think Google for cable), and just announced today a second round infusion of VC cash to keep its TV listings up to date. Their 30 second elevator pitch goes something like this: They're the... [More]

Blogging Reaches the VP Suite...
...No, not the Vice President of the United States. The other VP's office...the Fortune 500-ish boardroom. The key indicators? First, Stephen Baker from BusinessWeek brings us "The Inside Story on Corporate Blogs." Although he indicates that only 22 of the 500 largest U.S. companies operate public blogs from the executive suite (i.e., 4.4%), Baker notes the real focus has been for companies to build "social networks" and connections with customers -- even as many Fortune-sized companies continue to be "scared" of critical comments in public...
