The Google Juggernaut

story today entitled "Is Google Too Powerful?"
Various memes: "Anything But Google" backlash settling in, too powerful, beginning of antitrust chatter, too data driven, not human enough, etc.
I laugh, especially with the comparisons to Microsoft in the mid 90s.
First, there are about a gazillion other search engines an URL away. Feel free to use another one.
Google just happens to have built one that everyone else really seems to like and use. If you don't like Google, there are plenty of choices, and therefore far from a monopoly.
Two, as the article observes, "Google gave advertisers a good chunk of the 50% of ad spending wasted in traditional media."
If you agree with the premise that search (and search advertising) brings buyers and sellers together more efficiently than other mass media, it's really too bad about those intermediary players caught between the chasm, but hey, this is classic "Innovator's Dilemma."
Change your business model before someone changes it for you.
Or, as others have put it more bluntly have said, chew your own leg off.
The fact so many others are saving half of that old advertising budget means that that money can be released back into the ecosystem to drive innovation in companies' products, services, customer service, and the like, or to come up with the next better mousetrap.
With that said, I do think the Googleites would be well-served to listen very carefully to the marketplace, to their critics, and most importantly, to their customers.
Everyone always seems to be gunning for you as you step closer to the peak of Mount Everest...a little bit of modesty can go a long way as the mob starts polishing up their slingshots.
Read the piece. It's got all angles. And also some of the spin from others, as there's a lot of different perspectives on this.
Finally, trust that there are probably a few thousand kids laboring away in a few thousand garages working to come up with their own Google killer.
Maybe it's time for the Googleites to start thinking about chewing their own leg off? : )
Whatever you do, stay paranoid.
