It is happening it Italy.....wouldn't it be great if it happened everywhere?
For every IBM System z10 installed, the IBM Italy team plants a tree at La Pica Botanical Garden in Modena province. Developed with the support of teachers of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, La Pica Botanical Garden has arisen out of the work and commitment of a group of volunteers in appreciation for the environment. The IBM team invites clients and schools to participate in the planting which they have been doing since May 2008. The team places a plate at the base of the tree that carries the serial number of the machine.
How cool is that?
No seriously...how cool is it? Mainframes may be "old" but they are ever so young at heart. System z virtualization is driven by 40 years of investment. Mainframe virtualization helps maximize data center return on investment because with it, and the ability to run it at 100 percent utilization, which can consolidate workloads at up to a 30 to 1 ratio. The System z provides opportunity for large-scale consolidation driving down both cost and energy consumption – generating savings of up to 80 percent compared with distributed data centers.
It really is about the whole package - power efficiencies and software savings - and that drives green!

Linux: lean, clean and green is a great article about the power of Linux and how it can change the world. e-waste is scary and taking steps to make where and how we live better via Linux....well who'd have thought? I haven't yet moved to Linux for my day to day work....but more and more I am trending in that direction. Anyone care to give me first steps, words of warning, helpful hints and tips, expectations, visions of the future I'll have once I have made the switch?
