Does age matter? Interesting question. I always wonder how who takes these surveys and who doesn't. Is it really about age or design? Many of these decisions about design are based on personal experience and knowledge, but system design and architecture tools often play a bigger role in this process.
If we use the right tools, for software design does that make a difference? So many tools, and so little time! I found this article on developerworks article about various tools and the underlying concepts behind them. It compares popular software tools for an IT architect, including the IBM® Rational® suite of products, which provides a complete set of tools to get the job done in the most efficient way.

What a great article: Bad attitudes cane lead to good innovationMy favorite lines from the article :
Look at the blogs on My developerWorks.....see any rebels?
The best ideas are the simplest is this rebellious ?
Are you a rebel?

Looking around developerWorks and My developerWorks, you just can't be bored. Now, maybe your eyes get tired of reading...but do your ears get tired of listening and learning?

Tip of the iceberg.... now it is about finding the time... anyone know of an application that can help give you fit more than 24 hours in a day?

Our utility company just started to offer a look into our day to day usage of electricity. An online tool (they call it a conservation tool) that allows residents to easily track daily use and monitor expenses. It is fascinating. ...especially with our very long hot summer.
We've all heard about the difference we can all make on this planet and now here is a tangible way I can readily see my impact. What's behind this online tool? Software! Do I know who's and how? No, What I do know is that it is an example of what software developers can do to help change the world...so I do know..people are behind the software...and people are you and me.
See The GReen IT Report for info on technologies and products that might give you ideas, help you learn, inspire you to create, and so much more. Every day, each of us can make a difference....as a consumer, as a worker, as a business, as a government....what will green do for you? and what can you do to be green?

Well, I want one that is smart...but what does that really mean? How can the "Earth" be smart or smarter? The planet is full of people...and lots of them... and lots of them are smart or want to be smart. People ...it just takes people....we are the change agents.... as we are the ones that can spur innovation. ...and that is you and me.
We, the people, are the ones that can make a difference. But how? I know I can use (or not use) devices and tools that change the impact I have on the planet. But is that what smarter really is? Yes ...and no. I have the chance to do more.
Technology is key. First though, I need some skills...and that is where developerWorks just SHINES. I have found so many valuable resources on developerWorks - from forums, to free code trials, to tutorials and training, to great technical articles, to My developerWorks blogs and bookmarks. From Ajax to Zend Core, developerWorks is the a great source for technical skill-building resource.
When I take it to the simplest level, Smarter Planet is about making this world a better place to live. So my learning new skills, applying them for the greater good and sharing what I know is one element of Smarter Planet.......and who doesn't want to make this world a better place?

Granted nothing in life it "truly" free.....but close enough. Now available on developerWorks...the fully loaded code...not the trial code....check it out at IBM Lotus Domino Designer code ....all you have to do is give a little information as you normally do on a download and the code is yours....hence the not "truly" free. Shall we call it no-charge, readily available, no monetary excchange or just call it GREAT!!.

Have you seen the new (ok...maybe just new to me) trial download page on developerWorks?
What's new? (or still just new to me?) the RSS feeds for product trial downloads!!!
And more...with so many options -- trial downloads, online trials, sandboxes, cloud offers, and betas -- there is now a FAQ to steer us to the best options.
I've recently become a fan of RSS feeds. I used to use them...then they overwhelmed me...and now I am back. Speaking of RSS readers and feeds.... check out this nice blog post about getting started.
Lastly, for some reason using RSS feeds seems very Smarter Planet to me? Is it?
There is so much to discover on developerWorks and the Rational Software Request for Enhancement (RFE) Community Site is one of them.
A place to give suggestions for future products....a place where reasonable ideas have a chance of being heard. All we want sometimes is just to be heard.
If you have an idea to help improve any of the Rational products, dive right in....here's your chance to search, view , comment on, vote for, watch, submit and track product requests for enhancements (RFEs). Give it a try....let your voice be heard.

Build your own virtual software factory? What a great analogy....I like simple....
For a moment, think of your software and systems delivery operations as a factory. Software products move through different departments—including analysis and planning, design and construction, delivery and operations—in much the same way traditional products move through a factory assembly line. No matter where the departments are globally, they can still produce high quality results as though they were in the same location.
How do you ensure that your factory is operating at optimal efficiency? Ask yourself these questions, and take action on the answers with the ultimate goal of reducing costs without compromising quality.
As I mentioned in a previous blog ... .free software is a good thing
But sometimes you want more....so I found more about XPages
Steve Castledine has just created a new framework that will allow developers to quickly create a new XPage application using OneUI. It gives you an option of a 2 or 3 column layout, this could prove very useful when you want to quickly see the power of XPages. It has the following key features.
Easy out of the box layout so you can start building your XPage application
Has 2 or 3 column layouts simply by dragging the appropriate custom control onto your XPage
Login and Search functionality
Tab and Menu item highlighting
Handles browser languages, so if you add the appropriate property file for that language XPages will use it automatically
Uses standard css shipped with XPages, however also contains themes for new v2.1 of OneUItogether with additional themes metal, gold, red, green
Automatic Sidebar, links box, footers, tab menus custom controls built in. Others coming soon.
