"On Spaceship Earth there are no passengers; everybody is a member of the crew. We have moved into an age in which everybody's activities affect everybody else." -Marshall McLuhan
Now that describes how each of us has an impact and can help make our world and work smarter and greener. developerWorks offers a plethora of resources to help techies gain skill and knowledge about technologies that, when used for the greater good, transform how we work, play, exchange information, manage and operate.
Techies really are the leaders today in changing how we all work and survive. Yes, bold statements...but why not? So what's available on developerWorks (and My developerWorks):
My developerWorks: search on the tags: green, smarter_planet, energy (to name a few) ... share and tag your bookmarks too.
developerWorks: where to start? easy - The GReen IT Report . The GReen IT Report (also called the GRIT Report - oh no...a FLA (see previous blog post)) is an aggregator of content, code and collaboration ideas. Recent additions include a number of no-charge trial downloads of Tivoli, Rational and Optim software as well as articles : Going Green and staying secure to Creating mobile apps with Scala, Android or Eclipse to Building virtual appliances with Open Virtualization to Solar powered networks for anyone: think Linux.
While visiting the GReen IT Report., do check out the People and Idea tab.......my fan favorite is the water based glasses under Earth Insights.

Three part series written by the developers on the IBM® Rational® Requirements Composer team who had a hand in designing and implementing that part of the offering:

Does age matter? Interesting question. I always wonder how who takes these surveys and who doesn't. Is it really about age or design? Many of these decisions about design are based on personal experience and knowledge, but system design and architecture tools often play a bigger role in this process.
If we use the right tools, for software design does that make a difference? So many tools, and so little time! I found this article on developerworks article about various tools and the underlying concepts behind them. It compares popular software tools for an IT architect, including the IBM® Rational® suite of products, which provides a complete set of tools to get the job done in the most efficient way.

I started with the demo
and then something about the word free and Rhapsody got my attention: download a free trial version of IBM® Rational® Rhapsody® Developer V7.5, the embedded, real-time or technical application systems and software development solution that improves your productivity throughout the embedded systems and software development lifecycle from requirements capture to implementation and deployment. Rhapsody Developer enables model driven development (MDD) based on industry standard UML® and SysML, providing host and target-based simulation with full application development environments for C, C++, Ada, and Java™ including code generation of behavioral diagrams targeting real time operating systems or constrained targets such as microcontrollers. All these downloads...sometimes I just don't know where to start.

Build your own virtual software factory? What a great analogy....I like simple....
For a moment, think of your software and systems delivery operations as a factory. Software products move through different departments—including analysis and planning, design and construction, delivery and operations—in much the same way traditional products move through a factory assembly line. No matter where the departments are globally, they can still produce high quality results as though they were in the same location.
How do you ensure that your factory is operating at optimal efficiency? Ask yourself these questions, and take action on the answers with the ultimate goal of reducing costs without compromising quality.

If you can't describe what you are doing as a process, you don't know what you're doing.
W. Edwards Deming
Technology is destructive only in the hands of people who do not realize that they are one and the same process as the universe.
That quote by Deming says it all to me. Now...granted I do like to break things yet I thrive on process. I especially believe in software development processes...without a documented and consistent process.....you betray your users....they suffer. There is a need for structure that allows for reasonable decisions to be made based on appropriate business and technical input aligned with stakeholder demands and customer requirements. Besides being my interest in being a Chief Happiness Officer, my other favorite title is Scrum Master
Reading Susan Visser's blog today, led me to Agile Planning in real life: first hand advise for developing releases with agile planning., which does answer the question for me....yes you can have process and still be agile...in fact....it is the way of development today.

Over the past few months, The Rational Edge ezine has transformed into a new Web site called “Leading Innovation,” The final issue of The Rational Edge ezine was published in late May, 2009.
“Leading Innovation” is your guide to strategic vision in software and systems delivery from IBM Rational. On these new pages, you’ll find the same thought leadership from Rational -- the writers, the papers, the technical and strategic know-how -- that The Rational Edge ezine delivered. Plus, all the past issues of The Rational Edge are there as archived editions.
“Leading Innovation” is updated frequently with new white papers and links to external articles written by IBM Rational experts and software industry gurus.
Now....for the best part..... You are invited to this new content AND if you have any comments, Mike Perrow iwelcomes your comments. Send comments to him at mailto:email@example.com with Subject: Comments about Leading Innovation
I always like when the author / owner encourages feedback. It is one of the reasons I so value the new comment/feedback template for articles on developerWorks.

At some point, we all come in contact with "medical devices" and today that equipment has intelligence.
Some interesting reads on the topic :
Smarter Healthcare - what it means to all of us - ideas, perspectives and what is happening now.
A new approach to verifying and validating medical device development :Even the simplest of medical devices is increasing in complexity. This complicates compliance testing and premarket certification activities. These issues can be addressed by using a model-based verification and validation process in your medical device development. Read further to learn how to reduce the total development time and shorten the FDA submission process to gain a competitive advantage, getting your compliant products to market faster.
and tie this to Safety considerations for medical device design : Medical devices provide important life-maintenance and life saving functions. This means that faults that interfere with their proper functioning can lead to injury and death of patients and medical staff. This talk will discuss the techniques and work products appropriate for safety analysis and design of embedded medical devices, including hazard analysis, fault tree analysis (FTA), fault means and effect analysis (FMEA) and fault means, effect, and criticality analysis (FMECA). This talk will also discuss a UML profile for creating such analyses and how they can be linked to requirements and design.
and you have a perfect storm to learning.

• 1. I'm satisfied with what I'm already using: if ain’t broke don’t fix it.
• 2. No one else is using it.: what came first chicken or egg
• 3. I don't think it can perform well enough.- trust
• 4. I don't know how to get started.- what do I do
• 5. It's hard to make it a habit.: “Energy and persistence conquer all things.” Benjamin Franklin
Isn't it all about decisions? From a software perspective that starts at the beginning
a better question is ...where does it end....
