Here’s an interesting IT exercise:
Try explaining Cloud Computing to your significant other
I set off on a mission a few weeks ago to explain what I work on at IBM to my spouse. In doing so, I realized that the first thing I needed to do to actually succeed at that was to relate cloud computing to something that she could understand. In the end, I decided on using rental cars as an analogy.
As it turned out, this example resonated very well with many different people, and I received several comments and tweets about how different people planned to try this out. What was brought to my attention was that this example was not only relevant to spouses but to others as well. I think my favorite tweet of this nature came from @CloudGathering.
I quote, “Or parent/roommate/neighbor/dog! MT @IBMcloud: How to explain cloud to your spouse -- great analogy from @TalkToErik ibm.co/YoFPJS”
I also received several recommendations on how the story could be extended. For example, @DigitalDruid0 suggested that the example be enhanced to include how cloud (and a rental car) is “Fit for Purpose.” The cloud allows you to select different services to meet different needs, just as you would rent a different car for a trip to the home improvement store than for a family vacation.
