Cloud computing is a style of computing in which dynamically scalable resources, such as processor, storage, or bandwidth, are provided as a service over the Internet. The use of cloud computing minimizes the amount of IT expertise needed in-house, as well as the time it takes to install and configure a new system.
An Integrated Cloud Solution is a complete, pre-built system that integrates service management software, servers, storage, and financing to quickly enable a private cloud. The intention is that a client uses this system as his own, private Cloud, without the time and expertise that such an endeavor would normally require if the client had to design, build, and configure it using available hardware, software, and IT skills. Integrated Cloud Solutions have been chosen by clients in widely different fields, including research, education, IT, and medicine.
IBM has several types of Integrated Cloud Solutions, of which IBM System x Integrated Offering for Cloud (xIOC) is the latest. IBM System x Integrated Offering for Cloud (xIOC) is a smaller, less expensive Integrated Cloud solution that employs IBM System x hardware throughout.
Designed by IBM to meet customer needs for cloud services, the hardware and software is carefully selected for this solution. IBM also thoroughly tests an Integrated Cloud Solution to ensure that the hardware and software work seamlessly together, and any known problems are resolved.
An Integrated Cloud Solution consists of these components:
IBM manufacturing assembles the hardware for each client’s Integrated Cloud Solution, and installs the necessary software. IBM manufacturing does all work that can be done prior to shipping the system to the client site, so that the system can be deployed as quickly as possible. Documentation is also provided that explains, in great detail, what must be done at the client site to attach hardware and configure software. IBM typically sends a team on-site for one week to install and configure both the hardware and software. The Integrated Cloud Solution is attached to the client’s existing hardware.
The client is responsible only for scheduling and provisioning the individual VMs (to allocate processor, storage, and other resources as needed) after the IBM team is finished. Of course, the client is also responsible for installing and maintaining client-unique applications and any application software packages that they require. Clients need little in-house expertise to run these systems after they are deployed.
When reporting a problem to IBM service, an Integrated Cloud Solution client receives support from a central location, and obtains assistance or provides feedback to one person. The client need not be concerned about isolating the source of the problem or interacting with multiple vendors or multiple IBM support organizations.
