I get many feedbacks and email requests from folks who are trying to collect all the latest device firmware updates for their Power systems. If you are like many you struggle with:
I am often asked, what is the IBM best practice for managing Device/IO firmware on Power servers. Working as an architect on the Electronic Fix Distribution tools at IBM, including Fix Central, I have talked with many customers and find there is not one perfect answer for all. But I am consistently aware that there is one set of utilities that customers are not aware of, and that is the Microcode Discovery Services and Inventory Scout utilities.
If you have an HMC that is managing your systems, then you are probably already aware that the HMC can be configured to connect directly to the IBM support system. The HMC actually uses Inventory Scout utilities under the covers to gather device firmware levels from your systems and compares them with the available levels from IBM. If you want to know more about how to do this via the HMC visit (This document is a bit dated to Power 5, but it hasn’t changed much since then, I’ve asked the HMC team to update for Power 8 and Power 9 Knowledge Center sites) :
If you are not using an HMC and if you are running AIX, then I would like to invite you to check out the Microcode Discovery Services and Inventory Scout utilities. Documented here: http
