Download Director for Browsers that don't support Java applets

With the new release of Download Director (DD) available March 12, 2017 you can use DD after doing an installation even if your browser does not support Java applets. Prior to this release, DD required a browser that supported applets. Some browsers, for example, Chrome and Edge, stopped or will stop supporting Java applets.
If you are using a browser that does support applets, you will see no differences.
Please be aware that the standard browser and firewall warnings are still displayed just like they are with any browser/firewall, and the Java warning messages are still displayed just like they were.
You only need do the installation once. Future clicks of the download button/link should launch the DD Java WebStart App.

Below are screen shots when using the Chrome browser to do a download.
(1) Click download link/button.
Chrome blocks pop-ups by default as displayed in the upper right corner of the browser window.
Click that Pop-up blocked icon to display and then
Select "Always allow pop-ups..." and click the download link/button again to see the installation instructions.
(2) Installation instructions are displayed. Install DD.
Read installation instructions and scroll down to "Install Download Director" button.
(3) Click Install Download Director.
Browser "Save As" dialog is displayed for you to save the installation/setup JNLP file that is used to launch DD Java WebStart installation and setup program.
(4) Click Save and browser displays saved file in lower right corner of browser window just like it does for any file saved from the browser.
(5) Click the "IBM_Install_DD" jnlp to launch the installer.
This is consistent with any application that is downloaded with the browser and launched. You would get the standard browser and firewall warnings about launching an application (not shown here and varies with each OS, firewall app, and browser). You must allow the app to run. The DD installation application downloads and installs DD. With Chrome, you get a message like this if the browser is still open:
You need to close all Chrome browser windows to complete the install. This is consistent with other application installations too, although we only have this issue with Chrome. No other browsers require a shutdown when installing DD.
(6) Shut down the browser and click Retry
The DD Setup complete dialog is displayed.
(7) Click "Close this window" and DD download starts and completes.
This is the Java WebStart application running instead of the Java applet. This is indicated in the window title bar with "App" in "IBM Download Director App". Other than that, the DD Java WebStart app looks and behaves the same way as the DD Java applet that is used today.
We are working to resolve a known issue with Chrome for some operating systems where the DD Installation/Setup webpage is shown every time a download link/button is clicked and then a few seconds later DD pops up and does the download. For additional information, please see Download Director FAQs.
