With the R8.5 DS8880 announcement in September we got the DS8882F (533x model 983), which is a very compact and rack-mountable version of the DS8880. It shares not only the microcode version with the other DS8880 models, but also has the same advanced function capabilities like the larger models, e.g. the new option for Cyber Resiliency (Safeguarded Copy), which helps to protect against logical data corruption like ransomware.
The DS8882F like the DS8884F is based on dual 6-core Power S822 POWER8 machines as processor complexes. With a maximum cache of 256 GB, it has Maximum-IOps properties which are very similar to that Business-Class model.
The DS8882F is a machine of just 16U in height. It is limited to one pair of High-Performance Flash Enclosures (Gen-2) with up to 48 flash drives, but using the new 15.36 TB High-Capacity Flash, this already can mean up to 737 TB raw. It holds up to 4 fibre adapters (16 Gb), of 4 ports each. It is either possible to mount this box into any client-supplied stardard 19" EIA 310D rack, or with its 16U height it can be built into and combined with one of the Z 3907 Business Class machines sharing the same rack, like the z14 ZR1 or the LinuxONE LR1.
Within the HPFE pair, even some flash capacity intermix is possible to a certain extent, like mixing between various versions of High-Performance Flash (400 GB...3.2 TB). Or, like mixing between various options of High-Capacity Flash (3.84 TB...15.36 TB).
The only function not offered for this small model is zHyperLink. Everything else, like Transparent Cloud Tiering or the many synergy functions with i, p, Z or Db2, is there. This model offers the same high availability as the bigger DS8000 models and due to its compact size, it could be used to replace DS8700 and older end-of-service systems, a DS8800, or even a smaller DS8870.
