We are working on several Redpapers to describe various solutions using IBM Spectrum Scale 4.1.1. Focusing on integration, analytics, and use cases more than product installation guides. We published A Deployment Guide for IBM Spectrum Scale Object Redpaper last year that shows the install process to set up Spectrum Scale Object with OpenStack Swift (Object Store). I want to highlight an article by Sandeep Ramesh Patil and Sandeep Bazar that discusses writing Mobile apps that store the objects in an OpenStack Swift environment with Spectrum Scale. It is one thing to describe how to build the environment to store object that can scale globally and it is important to have even more discussions about the types of use cases that will thrive by storing objects in the cloud.
Develop mobile apps with IBM MobileFirst Object Store Adapter and backend IBM Spectrum Scale Object moves the discussion to an area that is exploding in the Mobile area and creating a need for a scalable low cost cloud object repositories. As mobile app development continues to expand the need for object storage expands with it and the discussion moves from what is object storage and how do I implement it to when can I start using it. Here is a figure from the article illustrating the MobileFirst Object Store Architecture.
MobileFirst Object Store Architecture
Object storage has several unique characteristics that set it apart from traditional file and block storage:
- It is highly scalable
- It has the ability to have user-defined metadata associated with objects
- Data is accessible from anywhere over https
- Users can access it via RESTful interface
- It offers a lower cost for storage, overall
