All, I just announced this residency: Best Practices for SVC/Storwize V7000 including RtC, ST-3D30-R01 .
It will be hosted by IBM Israel in their Tel Aviv offices.
The book that we are updating is: IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Best Practices and Performance Guidelines .
I know it is 4Q and if you have problems getting time away from the office, then I might be able to accommodate remote participation.
Since I have been involved in developing Redbooks and Redpapers for IBM® Storage, Storage Cloud, Storage Systems and Solutions the past few years I have noticed a theme that continues to grow with each project: IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS™). GPFS is more than storage it is about data management. The initial GPFS support in the OpenStack® Cinder Havana Release is evidence of the growing value of GPFS in the Cloud Infrastructure.
If you are thinking it is time to learn more about GPFS here is... [More]
Many of you may have heard of "diskcore" (and tapecore too) and always wondered what it was and how you might be able to use it, or whether it was some uber-secret society that if you had to ask to join, then you weren't going to get in, or you needed a funny handshake to be invited. Not so.
When Tim Berners-Lee (before he was knighted) and an untold number of "geeks" were still playing around with HTTP, possibly using a Netscape browser that ran on OS/2 (I have no idea if Netscape ever ran on OS/2 but I know that... [More]

The port to local node communication is used for mirroring write cache as well as metadata exchange between nodes and is critical to the stable operation of the cluster. The DH8 nodes with their 8-port and 12-port configurations provide an opportunity to isolate the port to local node traffic from other cluster traffic on dedicated ports thereby providing a level of protection against misbehaving devices and workloads that could compromise the performance of the
Additionally, there is benefit in isolating remote... [More]
Prior to the version 7.2 SAN Volume Controller software release, stretched cluster configurations did not provide manual failover capability, and data being sent across a long distance link had the potential to be sent twice. The addition of 'site awareness' in version 7.2 routes I/O traffic between SVC nodes and storage controllers to optimize the data flow, and it polices I/O traffic during a failure condition to allow for a manual cluster invocation to ensure consistency.
The use of Enhanced Stretched Cluster continues to... [More]
Welcome to the IBM System Storage Red books blog! IBM Redbooks publications are developed and published by the IBM International Technical Support Organization (ITSO). The ITSO develops and delivers skills, technical know-how, and materials to IBM technical professionals, Business Partners, clients, and the marketplace in general. The Redbooks are the output of residencies, which are intensive, multi-week work efforts where small teams explore and document product implementation, integration and operations, often in the context of... I was flying above the clouds headed for Tokyo after working on our Redbooks Publication IBM SmartCloud Storage Access V1.2 Implementation Guide in Shanghai. It was a very uneventful flight and then I saw something looming in the distance rising up through the clouds. Although I tried to tie the object up ahead to an analogy of my storage cloud work I quickly figured out that we were doing an amazing fly by of Mt. Fuji from 20K+ ft.
Recently, I published a draft of a new Redpaper,... [More]
No, this is not a pre-announcement of the death of Lotus Notes. Nope, what this is is something that came out of a discussion we were having on a residency that I am running about some whizzy new hardware that will be announced very shortly. While I was waiting for what seemed like an eternity for Lotus Notes to wake up and open itself, one of the residents said "have you upped the JVM memory setting?". What, says I in my best I haven't got a clue what you are talking about expression.
So, a few clicks later and a restart of... [More]

All previously announced IBM Easy Tier functions apply to the new flash cards, including... [More]
Characterized by its performance and reliability, the Fiber Channel Protocol (FCP) has emerged as the technology of choice for block-based storage access.
While iSCSI over Ethernet has been an option for lower-cost storage networking, the performance limitations and packet loss that are associated with Ethernet have limited the usefulness of iSCSI in demanding storage environments.
With the advent of 10 Gbps Ethernet, and the development of lossless Ethernet technology, internet Small Computer System Interface... [More]
On June 4 , IBM announced improvements to the IBM DS8870 storage software. I had the pleasure to work with a team of IBM colleagues from around the world to document some of those enhancements in IBM Redbooks publications. My focus was on VMware vSphere and in particular the new features that pertain to the DS8870. With VAAI we now also support the Block Zero primitive in addition to ATS and Clone Blocks previously introduced.
We did some... [More]

Over the past many years (more than I care to admit) that I worked in IBM ® System & Technology Group, and now as an ITSO Storage Project Leader, I have witnessed amazing performance improvements:
CPU speed has increased up to 8-10X
DRAM speed up to 7-9X
Network speed up to 100X
Bus speed up to 20X
Speed has increased in just about every facet. But, I have also found that disk speed has increased only up to 1.2X . Historically it has been the disk tier that is the bottleneck and slows... [More]

Like at the end of 2012 for the first DS8870 release, then again in the second quarter of this year for important Easy tier updates, the European Storage Support Center in Mainz was one more time the host of ITSO Redbooks residencies for the DS8870 Release 7.2. announced 19 November 2013 .
As usual, the Redbooks participants came from various parts of the world -- we hosted guests from Brasil, Canada, Indonesia and USA, together with participating authors from Mainz.
For several years already the DS8000 series has featured two types of space efficient volumes:
Track space efficient (TSE) volumes
Extent space efficient (ESE) volumes
Track space efficient (TSE) volumes are used as target volumes of a FlashCopy Space Efficient operation and require the definition of a repository from which tracks are gradually allocated.
Extent space efficient (ESE) volumes are the actual thin provisioned volumes that can be used by host applications. The dynamic... [More]
We recently published the IBM® Redguide™ Taming the Data Beast with Tarmin GridBank and the IBM XIV Storage System to coincide with the IBM XIV® Storage System announcement on October 8. Thin Provisioning provides a volume size as specified but uses physical storage only when needed. While this sounds like a great way to efficiently use the available storage space, in real life situations this may not always be true. When files are deleted or moved the now unused data is usually still residing on the physical storage. The host system may indicate that the used capacity is now smaller but the physical storage is still in use and remains allocated to that host system.
Space reclamation deals with this situation by providing... [More]
Complex, aging, and inflexible IT infrastructures create business challenges and raise administration costs.
