Well the picture is not exactly our latest Gen 5 switches, just a reminder of how far we have come since the days of personal computers with two floppy disks ! If you tell the kids of today that they just won't believe you !
Anyway, getting back on topic and in line with announcements from IBM on December 3rd, we published these IBM Redbooks Product Guides:
IBM Network Advisor
IBM System Networking SAN96B-5
On June 4 , IBM announced improvements to the IBM DS8870 storage software. I had the pleasure to work with a team of IBM colleagues from around the world to document some of those enhancements in IBM Redbooks publications. My focus was on VMware vSphere and in particular the new features that pertain to the DS8870. With VAAI we now also support the Block Zero primitive in addition to ATS and Clone Blocks... [More]
Secure Data Overwrite (SDO) is a method of securely overwriting data on DS8000 series storage. While it's most often referred to for discontinuing existing storage, it's use is not only limited to this.
There are other reasons that someone may wish to have SDO run on their machine. For example, if you are physically moving a storage device to a separate location, you may wish to utilize SDO to secure your data in transit. Also, if you're repurposing... [More]
Characterized by its performance and reliability, the Fiber Channel Protocol (FCP) has emerged as the technology of choice for block-based storage access.
While iSCSI over Ethernet has been an option for lower-cost storage networking, the performance limitations and packet loss that are associated with Ethernet have limited the usefulness of iSCSI in demanding storage environments.
With the advent of 10 Gbps Ethernet, and the development of lossless Ethernet... [More]

Early adopters of virtual desktop infrastructures (VDIs) that relied on hard disk drives (HDDs) were disappointed by the lack of performance of the solution:
Response times suffered because of the unique nature of the I/O demand that VDI places upon the storage subsystem.
Scaling the infrastructure meant adding expensive, yet inefficient, tier-one storage to handle the additional I/Os, even if capacity were not an issue.
Management of the infrastructure sprawl became... [More]

Easy Tier Application
Easy Tier Heat Map Transfer
Are you a DS8870 user and do you already take advantage of the Easy Tier functions offered at no charge?
If so - here are some highlights from the June 4th announcement for DS8870.
With Easy Tier generation V , three substantial enhancements you are now able to:

Complex, aging, and inflexible IT infrastructures create business challenges and raise administration costs. Low utilization, low efficiency, and storage and performance bottlenecks create additional limitations. IBM FlashSystem storage products can be used with IBM PureFlex Systems to create seamless hardware integration across server, storage, and networking. PureFlex Systems also provide centralized management on the compute, storage, and network layers.
Here are 5... [More]
We recently published the IBM® Redguide™ Taming the Data Beast with Tarmin GridBank and the IBM XIV Storage System to coincide with the IBM XIV® Storage System announcement on October 8. One of the key concepts (aha moment) for me while working on this Redguide was the opportunity to scale the data and the management of the data using the grid-based products together.
Are you a new DFSMSrmm user? Then this IBM Redbooks publication introduces you to the DFSMSrmm basic concepts and functions. You learn how to manage your tape environment by implementing the DFSMSrmm management policies.
Are you already using DFSMSrmm? In that case, this IBM Redbooks publication provides the most up-to-date information about the new functions and enhancements introduced with the latest release of DFSMSrmm. You will find useful information for implementing these new... [More]
Back in early June, we posted on this blog a short article about the announce of new Easy Tier features , delivered with the IBM DS8870 Release 7.1.
One of those new significant new feature is the Easy Tier Server. We just released a new IBM RedPaper that gives you an insight into the concepts , architecture and implementation of that ... [More]
DFSMS is the standard methodology worldwide for managing enterprise data and storage on the z/OS platform. It provides an automated, centralized, policy-based solution for z/OS storage management. While there are many new enhancements in z/OS V2.1 DFSMS – the following are 5 of my favorite.
