Bottlenecks are, well, a pain in the neck, as anyone who has worked in IT well knows. Often there is little information to ascertain what the problem is and diagnosis can be time consuming and often fruitless. And this is a problem that can be exacerbated by the more complex SAN environments that exist these days, and if you couple this with the speeds at which the SAN can now operate, then any bottleneck can have an immediate noticeable effect.
So, how do we mitigate this? Well the first thing is to make sure that the detection tools are... [More]
For those of us that prefer a grown-up operating system for our smartphones (ok, ok, kidding, calm down you iOSites), I am certainly pleased to see that we are now able to get IBM Redbooks on the Android platform.
Naturally it took longer to port to Android as Android users are typically more demanding, intelligent, witty, good-looking, and all these had to be factored in before it was released to Google Play. I shall stop now .
Anyway, it's there now, download it, works with your fave ebook reader too:
Gen 5 Fibre Channel is the latest evolution in Storage Area Networks (SANs). Based on technology developed by the T11 technical committee that defines Fibre Channel interfaces, Gen 5 Fibre Channel doubles the data throughput of 8 Gbps links, from 800 Megabytes per second (MB/sec) to 1600 MB/sec with Gen 5 Fibre Channel.
The benefits of faster networking technology are easy to understand. Data transfers are faster, fewer links are needed to accomplish the same task, fewer devices need to be managed, and less power is consumed when Gen 5... [More]
As most people are aware (see Barry's post) we just announced the Storwize V5000. It fits neatly between the Storwize V3700 and the V7000.
And of course no product is complete without an accompanying IBM Redbook.
So, here goes:
One new one:
Implementing the IBM Storwize V5000
And the new-ish one:
Secure your data with industry-standard data-at-rest encryption with no performance impact .
With the ever-growing landscape of national, state, and local regulations, industry requirements, and increased security threats, ensuring the protection of an organization’s information is a key part of operating a successful business.
Encrypting “data at rest” is a key element when addressing these concerns.
Here are a few key facts about XIV encryption:
While most storage products... [More]
Cloud computing is defined as the use of computing services and resources (hardware and software) that are delivered over a network, typically Ethernet. OpenStack is being developed as an industry standard Cloud computing project. OpenStack is a global collaboration of developers and cloud computing technologists producing the ubiquitous open source cloud computing platform for public and private clouds. To learn more about OpenStack, refer to the project website at: www.openstack.org

Back in the Fibre Channel world, we made a couple of announcements in the IBM/Cisco portfolio on 19 May that might be of interest. And in support of this we have created a new product guide, and updated another:
Cisco MDS 9250i Multiservice Fabric Switch - New
This IBM® Redbooks® Product Guide describes the Cisco MDS 9250i Multiservice Fabric Switch. The Cisco MDS 9250i Multiservice Fabric Switch, the next generation of the highly flexible, industry-leading, and proven Cisco MDS 9200 Series Multiservice Switches, is an... [More]
The port to local node communication is used for mirroring write cache as well as metadata exchange between nodes and is critical to the stable operation of the cluster. The DH8 nodes with their 8-port and 12-port configurations provide an opportunity to isolate the port to local node traffic from other cluster traffic on dedicated ports thereby providing a level of protection against misbehaving devices and workloads that could compromise the performance of the
Additionally, there is benefit in isolating remote... [More]
The wait is over, the IBM Redbooks publication; Implementing IBM FlashSystem 840 , SG24-8189 is available. The team; Marcos Figueirdo Jr., Adrian Flores, Ron Herrmann, Detlef Helmbrecht, Carsten Larsen, and Leandro Torolho, worked long hours to make this happen, with the help of the extremely knowledgeable Houston FlashSystem developers.
Read this book for practical application, and in-depth discussion of product architecture, software and hardware, its implementation, use cases, hints and tips.

Today, the changes in our world include the instrumentation, interconnectedness, and intelligence of our environments. Such changes combine to produce a massive glut of new useful information, from new and existing sources, with new ways to use it. These pressures typify a few of the storage challenges that we dealt with for some time now, but on a whole new scale. Businesses face a tidal wave of information and data that seems to increase daily. The ability to successfully and efficiently manage information and data has become imperative.... [More]
This Big Data Networked Storage Solution for Hadoop Redpaper provides a reference architecture, based on Apache Hadoop, to help businesses gain control over their data, meet tight service level agreements (SLAs) around their data applications, and turn data-driven insight into effective action.
I was in Las Vegas during Edge2013 and had a chance to talk to the IBM Product Manager of Storage for Big Data Analytics and HPC. I had printed a hardcopy of this Redpaper to give to him and just as... [More]

Can you use SVC with XIV as storage ?
YES , you can !
XIV and SVC can be a great combination, we have many customers using this combo.
Why ? flexibility and support for operating systems the XIV does not support.
But don't you have to pay twice for licenses if you want to do mirror data ? NO, its a special XIV license for the SVC which includes all the features that comes with the XIV, but for the SVC instead, neat isn't it ?
Very often I get questions on how to configure the XIV when... [More]
All communication between the XIV GUI, XCLI, Multi-System Manager and XIV systems utilize Secure Sockets Layering (SSL) via x509 certificates.
Beginning with XIV Storage System Software version 11.2 and XIV Storage Management Software version 4.1, you have the flexibility to install and use your own x509 certificates in addition to the built-in certificate. You can choose to use a certificate that is signed by either a trusted Certificate Authority (CA) vendor or your organization’s own private CA server. There are four steps required to... [More]
