At the beginning of the year I blogged about the updates to the LTFS EE V18.104.22.168 Redbooks pub. that included support for Elastic Storage 4.1. IBM has announced the IBM Spectrum Storage TM Family. An important part of the announcement is that LTFS provides the functionality for IBM Storage Archive™ and IBM Storage Scale™ is based upon IBM General Parallel File System™ or GPFS, also formerly known as code name Elastic Storage. The LTFS EE V22.214.171.124 changes were key to building a stronger... [More]

This year there have been several tape related announcements that increase your enterprise storage capacity without increasing your storage floor space. The TS4500 , IBM delivers the density that today’s and tomorrow’s data growth requires—along with the cost efficiency and the manageability to grow with business data needs while preserving existing investments in IBM tape library products. Now, organizations can achieve both a low cost per terabyte (TB) and a high TB density per square foot. In fact, TS4500 can store up... [More]
Over the years I have been involved with many disaster recoveries and clearly the teams that had good planning and testing had the best success. During a recovery is not the time to be learning about the behavior of the system. Whenever I had the opportunity to talk to the teams prior to having issues I always reminded that the backup plan is really a recovery plan. We need to meet our Service Level Agreements for backup times and success criteria and we also need to be meet the recovery needs of the business.
For large amounts of data, tape continues to have the best economy of scale for storage. 90% of the world's data was created in the last two years with 20% of that data being active and operational. Businesses typically want the important active data to have the fastest access and for the data that is important but not accessed often it makes sense to store it on the most cost effective storage platform. Using Linear Tape File System Enterprise Edition (LTFS EE) tape tier with Elastic Storage is a high quality way to... [More]

Secure Data Overwrite (SDO) is a method of securely overwriting data on DS8000 series storage. While it's most often referred to for discontinuing existing storage, it's use is not only limited to this.
There are other reasons that someone may wish to have SDO run on their machine. For example, if you are physically moving a storage device to a separate location, you may wish to utilize SDO to secure your data in transit. Also, if you're repurposing your storage for use by another department (for... [More]
Remote maintenance consists of autonomous maintenance work that does not require an immediate interaction with the client. The remote maintenance process is started when the product detects a malfunction and notifies the service provider. Product documentation usually refers to this as Call Home.
