This Big Data Networked Storage Solution for Hadoop Redpaper provides a reference architecture, based on Apache Hadoop, to help businesses gain control over their data, meet tight service level agreements (SLAs) around their data applications, and turn data-driven insight into effective action.
I was in Las Vegas during Edge2013 and had a chance to talk to the IBM Product Manager of Storage for Big Data Analytics and HPC. I had printed a... [More]
IBM Linear Tape File System Enterprise Edition V1.1 (LTFS EE) was announced on June 10th at Edge2013 in Las Vegas. To help launch the product we published the draft : IBM Linear Tape File System Enterprise Edition V1.1 Installation and Configuration Guide , SG24-8143 . LTFS EE for the IBM System Storage TS3500 Tape Library provides seamless integration of LTFS with IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS) by creating an LTFS tape tier. LTFS EE can play a major role in reducing the... [More]
Back in early June, we posted on this blog a short article about the announce of new Easy Tier features , delivered with the IBM DS8870 Release 7.1.
One of those new significant new feature is the Easy Tier Server. We just released a new IBM RedPaper that gives you an insight into the concepts , architecture and implementation of that ... [More]
The Faster DB2 Performance with IBM FlashSystem IBM Redbooks Solution Guide , TIPS-1041, was published on 18 July 2013.
This solution guide explains the benefits of using IBM FlashSystem storage products with IBM DB2 databases. When you move your databases, or part of your databases, to FlashSystem storage, you can improve the performance of the entire database.
Replace slower hard disk drive (HDD) and solid state device (SSD) flash solutions with FlashSystem... [More]
Just over a week or so ago we completed the ITSO Redbook residency to create a book based on the SAN Volume Controller and the IBM FlashSystem 820. Now, normally we like to get these things out very quickly and the team, Danny Bryant, Christian Burns, Joao Marcos Leite, and Denis Senin worked very long hours to make this happen. As is always the case they were helped by those awfully nice developers at IBM Hursley in the UK, the home of storage virtualization.
What they could not have... [More]
This week I posted a new video for our IBM System Storage Tape Library Guide for Open Systems , SG24-5946 . The video includes a segment showing a tape cartridge being transported across libraries in the TS3500 Shuttle Complex. The TS3500 Shuttle Complex can access over 300,000 tapes and is now supported by IBMs Tape System Library Manager ( TSLM ) and High Performance Storage System ( HPSS ). Here is a figure from the book of the TS3500 Shuttle Complex. Select the link above to the... [More]
We just announced this residency via our weekly newsletter:
IBM Storwize V7000 Unified Redbook Update, ST-3D36-R01
It is a great opportunity to increase your skills and increase your personal and professional network.
And become a published author !
As 2013 draws to a close and travel gets harder as 4Q rapidly approaches, I have decided to try something a little different (yes, yes, I know we have done it in the past but normally only after some on-site attendance has taken place) and I am going to consider/pilot remote participation for some applicants for my residencies until year end.
So, if you have seen this residency: IBM Storwize V7000 Unified Redbook Update, ST-3D36-R01 you may have noticed this... [More]
Now that you have implemented IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage (IBM SONAS), you may be at the point where you are interested in Best Practices for daily administration and monitoring of the SONAS. There is a new draft available of the IBM SONAS Best Practices , SG24-8051.
This IBM Redbooks publication documents these Best Practices available for SONAS based on experience gained from actual... [More]
The Faster Microsoft SQL Server Performance with IBM FlashSystem Storage, TIPS 1038 IBM Redbooks Solution Guide describes techniques for improving SQL database performance by integrating FlashSystem storage into your environment.
If latency, or I/O wait time, is limiting the speed of your database, consider upgrading your storage. Faster processors and increased bandwidth might be wasted if applications still wait on storage. Storage... [More]
“To err is human; to forgive, divine.” Alexander Pope.
Well we are mixing up poetry and Star Wars here today (or tomorrow, if it is already tomorrow where you are), and finish it off with a cryptic message.
Anyway, let's cut to the chase here: a long time ago, in an IBM Redbook far, far away (December 2011), in an effort to get out timely information to the field, the first draft (which was a pre-review version), of the IBM Redbook Implementing the IBM Storwize V7000... [More]
Complex, aging, and inflexible IT infrastructures create business challenges and raise administration costs. Low utilization, low efficiency, and storage and performance bottlenecks create additional limitations. IBM FlashSystem storage products can be used with IBM PureFlex Systems to create seamless hardware integration across server, storage, and networking. PureFlex Systems also provide centralized management on the compute, storage, and network layers.
Here are 5... [More]
Many of you may have heard of "diskcore" (and tapecore too) and always wondered what it was and how you might be able to use it, or whether it was some uber-secret society that if you had to ask to join, then you weren't going to get in, or you needed a funny handshake to be invited. Not so.
When Tim Berners-Lee (before he was knighted) and an untold number of "geeks" were still playing around with HTTP, possibly using a Netscape browser that ran on OS/2 (I have no... [More]
All, I just announced this residency: Best Practices for SVC/Storwize V7000 including RtC, ST-3D30-R01 .
It will be hosted by IBM Israel in their Tel Aviv offices.
The book that we are updating is: IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Best Practices and Performance Guidelines .
I know it is 4Q and if you have problems getting time away from the office, then I might be able to accommodate... [More]
Recently we published an IBM Redbooks Solution Guide on Implementing IBM Easy Tier with IBM Real-time Compression.
IBM® Easy Tier® is a performance function that automatically and non-disruptively migrates frequently accessed data from magnetic media to solid-state drives (SSDs). In that way, the most frequently accessed data is stored on the fastest storage tier, and the overall performance is improved.
How does it work
Every volume is split into logical units... [More]

While bimbling around in developerWorks the other day I stumbled across something that I had long forgotten about. Well I am not entirely sure that I had ever seen it but I like to convince myself I know what is going on !
Anyway, sometimes we get spoiled in IBM having access to development at the click of a button so there is usually no need for us to utilize any other means to start a dialogue with them. Of course there are user groups, focus groups, informal and formal networks, social... [More]
