The main roadblock to Watson-shrinkage of this magnitude is reducing the amount of power required so that a handheld device is feasible. Parsing natural language is already part of Watson, but image recognition, in addition to voice recognition, will also be necessary for Watson to take into account a user’s environment. So imagine the next time you get a strange rash, and instead of worrying, seeing a doctor or posting to a healthcare website, pointing Watson 2.0 at it and ask if you should be worried. IBM is envisioning it—the reality will follow.
