How social analytics can help solve workforce woes

Social analytics was a big topic at Lotusphere 2012 and a theme underpinning the social business push. Social analytics can be applied across the board, whether it's exposing the ROI of social media marketing, measuring the interaction between teams across internal social networks or finding those with similar interests.
A demo by Sadat Shami within the IBM Innovation Lab showed a very interesting use of social analytics within the HR function.
In this case, social data can be analyzed and interpreted using Cognos Consumer Insight to explain workforce behavior patterns (why engineers aren't applying for jobs).
Using social analytics can help answer questions like:
Interestingly, contextual analysis of data across a number of forums/blogs/wikis etc. can be used to explain other phenomena around the business, eg. why there is low performance in the hiring process.
What do you do with these findings? Turn insights into action. In this example, the HR department can take steps to address perception: add customer testimonials to the company website, look at student outreach programs, etc.
