This page will show how to update the OS on the VIOS to a specific release. Scenarios where this may be needed are to bring a customer up to a supported release level, to fix an issue with an installed older release, or to bring two VIOS up to the same level. The latter reason is particularly important when working with Live Partition Mobility.
Obvious things really; have the software downloaded from Fix Central and located somewhere the VIOS can access it from. A dual VIOS configuration is preferable as you can upgrade one VIOS whilst the other takes care of all the routing.
Check the version of VIOS currently running:
220.127.116.11In this example, we want to move to 18.104.22.168. We've already downloaded the software from Fix Central and have placed it on an NFS share which is mounted on the VIOS. In this scenario, /mnt represents an NFS mount.Run the update as padmin:$ updateios -dev /mnt -accept -installWhere:
Specifies the device or directory containing the images to install.
The -install flag is used to install new and supported file sets onto the Virtual I/O Server. Attention: The log file, install.log in the user's home directory,
will be overwritten with a list of all file sets that were installed.
Specifies that you agree to required software license agreements for software to be installed.
You may encounter a warning at the end of the install about rebooting the VIOS. You can do this by:
$ shutdown -restart
You'll be asked to confirm the reboot. Ensure you have a dual VIOS setup that is correctly configured. Failure to do so may lead to loss of network and/or SAN connectivity.
