Thoughts from the Social Business Summit, Austin edition

Sat in on some great talks yesterday at the Social Business Summit in Austin, put on by the DachisGroup. I missed the morning session that included my IBM colleague Rawn Shah, Josh Bernoff of Forrester Research, and JP Rangaswami Salesforce.com, among others. After lunch, I performed as a musician with Michael Gold's jazz trio as he spoke and we demonstrated the art of collaborative innovation. You can read more about his ideas and approach at JazzImpact. I've always felt there were rich parallels between innovative organizations with rich participatory cultures and the experience of group musical improvisation. Nice to be a part of demonstrating that with Michael and our mutual good friend, mandolinist Paul Glasse.

Flat organizations still need leaders ... common purpose is more important than strategy ... social networks allow intimacy and presence at scale in a world that often doesn't allow for the walkaround manager ... encourage quests and reinvention at the edges ... real leaders thrive in open culture and feedback.
First priority is company culture. Everything else flows form there ... Zappos places such a high value on company culture that they offer new hires $4K to walk away after a few weeks of full salaried training just to make sure they want the job for the right reasons ... humility is a core value ... if a new higher interview excels in every category but doesn't get the company mission of delivering happiness, they're not hired.
