Thinking versus merely consuming data

podcast with SETI astrophysicist Dr. Laurance Doyle generated some substantial quotes. Here's one of my favorites -- his answer to my question about quantum leaps he sees or hopes are coming in how we, as a world, communicate.
Everybody has access now to information. We need to teach how to sift through and tell if it's good or not good information. I think I'd like to see a leap in that, so to speak ... You know, we're being just overloaded with information and we have to know how to tell what's good and what isn't. So there's no replacement for thinking. And I feel like we're coming upon more emphasis on the importance of that which would be replacing emphasis on facts -- instead, placing emphasis on thinking. And that's where I think the value of teachers in the world are going to be emphasized, hopefully. You know, like Jane Goodall is a great teacher; the Dali Lama is a great teacher. These people that are great teachers are going to kind of come to the fore. And I think the Internet is going to encourage that quality. So far it's upheld rather high quality in that regard, and I just look forward to that. That I think would be kind of revolutionary.
Also, check out PlanetQuest.org, which gets a prominent mention in the interview. Very cool program!
