Blubrry and Tech Talk Network, two that carry us) that use Flash code for a play-the-file button. So here is my explanation of what I have discovered and the solution I'm using as of today.
I use Pro Tools LE software on a Windows XP machine and have not tested this using a different mp3 codec than the one Pro Tools uses, but I suspect this might be a universal fix. Bottom line, a stereo 66kbit / 44.1k file in mpeg-2 layer 3 was generated by Pro Tools codec when I burned the file. Flash apparently does not like mpeg-2 or stereo or both. Pro Tools codec forces a 22050 sample rate and mpeg-2 format if you attempt to burn a stereo file at 64kbits. Burning a mono file at 64kbits yields a 44.1k sample rate and mpeg-1 layer 3 format which makes Flash happy and plays at the normal speed. So that's what I'm doing going forward and will be repairing and republishing all of our current podcasts in this manner. What fun! : (
Hope this helps anyone out there who is struggling with a podcast playback via a Flash button (such as that by wimpy) that is currently resulting in unintended comedy. I must encourage you to avoid listening to the ultrafast playback too many times. Once chipmunk speed is embedded in your head, normal speed will sound ... well ... downright wimpy.
