Free Linux distro "servers" the PS3 market: Germany-based Helios Software is offering an unnamed, freely downloadable, server-oriented Linux distribution for the PS3 that installs (from a script atop YDL or a downloadable CD ISO image) in less than 10 minutes. The company describes its distro as a version of Terra Soft's YDL that has been simplified (for more available RAM) and optimized (on-kernel AppleTalk and preinstalled Java™ 1.5 environment) for use as a server OS. Static timing for multicores: Extreme DA introduces GoldTime, a multithreaded static and statistical timing analyzer (based on the features of Extreme DA's XT Analysis product) that runs on multicore CPU platforms. GoldTime analyzes a design in terms of wave propagation from inputs to outputs; at any given time, it analyzes one "wave front," storing data for just that one wave in RAM, thereby minimizing peak memory footprint. Once the analysis is finished with the wave front, results are stored in disk.
