Sony's CCB gets Houdini-like special effects software: Side Effects Software Inc. announced today that it is working with Sony to provide Side Effects Software's award-winning Houdini server tools (Houdini Batch and Mantra) to Sony's new Cell Computing Board. Houdini Master is a suite for animation, 3D modeling, visual effects, simulation, compositing, and rendering that was originally designed for the motion picture industry.
Houdini Batch is the non-graphical version of Master that offers users command-line access to the program's features. You can set up a render farm and generate render scene description files and build up large numbers of scenes procedurally at render time using shared assets. Houdini Batch runs with the Houdini Master and Houdini Escape licenses.
Houdini Mantra is a state-of-the-art hybrid scan-line/ray-trace renderer that supports global illumination and point cloud textures.
More rendering for Cell/B.E. and this time it's mental: Academy Award-winning mental image's mental ray high-end rendering software may also be coming to the Sony Cell Computing Board -- the two companies expect to demonstrate their results in the second half of 2008. mental ray generates images of outstanding quality and unsurpassed realism and achieves scalable performance through the exploitation of parallelism on both multiprocessor machines and across networks of machines. The software uses advanced and proprietary acceleration and recursive sampling techniques for faster rendering on even the smallest, single processor machines.
