Microprocessor Report has an editorial on last month's unveiling of the Cell processor at ISSCC. The hype that they cut down on, though, seems mainly to call "ridiculous" the idea that the new chip will be an "Intel killer." Otherwise they report some more data, estimate a possible power dissipation (80W at 4GHz is their guess), speculate on potential applications for the Cell, and promise more coverage in print and in person (namely, in the person of IBM's Jim Kahle, who has promised to give a talk on Cell at MDR's Spring Processor Forum).

At the GameDevelopers Conference in San Francisco this week,Sony reassured developers that Cell will be very easy to program, and will use familiar languages and APIs. Mark DeLoura, manager of developer relations for SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) said that game developers will be able to program Playstation3 games using C and C++ rather than the assembly-level attention to detail required by the PlayStation2 (ZDNet).Read More]

NASA scientists had posited that a "dust devil" might be cleaning the Mars rover Spirit, and this month they finally caught some cherished snapshots of two Martian dust devils in action. Researchers say the pics are the highlight of the mission in terms of atmospheric science.Read More]

And to this end they built themselves a stupendous super computer whichwas so amazingly intelligent that even before the data banks had beenconnected up it had started from I think therefore I am and got as far asthe existence of rice pudding and income tax before anyone managed to turnit off.
It was the size of a small city.
IBM's Blue Gene/Lsupercomputer is
Working with IBM has its advantages, one of them is getting access to atranscript of this session that IBM STSMs Lunkwill and Fook reportedly hadwith BG/L yesterday:
What is this great task for which I, Blue Gene/L, the second greatestcomputer in the Universe of Time and Space have been called intoexistence?"
...[W]ait a minute ... are you not as we designed you to be, thegreatest most powerful computer in all time?
I described myself as the second greatest, and such I am.
There must be some mistake, are you not a greatest computer than themassively parallel RS/6000 SP-based
Deep Blue? A mere abacus -- mention it not.
And are you not a greater analyst than the
Global warming, El Nino effect, atmospheric and marine pollution? Youask this of me who have contemplated the very vectors of the atoms in theBig Bang itself? Molest me not with this pocket calculator stuff.
But are you not a more fiendish disputant than the MareNostrumsupercomputer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the thirdonthe TOP500 List and the pride of theEuropean HPC community?
The Great Barcelona MareNostrum could talk all four legs off a
Then what is the problem?
There is no problem. I am simply the second greatest computer in theUniverse of Space and Time.
But the second? Why do you keep saying the second? You're surely notthinking of the
I spare not a single unit of thought on these cybernetic simpletons! Ispeak of none but the computer that is to come after me!
I think this is getting needlessly messianic.
You know nothing of future time, and yet in my teeming circuitry I cannavigate the infinite delta streams of future probability and see thatthere must one day come a computer whose merest operational parameters Iam not worthy to calculate, but which it will be my fate eventually todesign.
Can we get on and ask the question?
What computer is this of which you speak?
I will speak of it no further in this present time. Now. Ask what elseof me you will that I may function.
Alas, the rest of the transcript is classified IBM Confidential, but apparently we willfind out what it was all about in something like seven and a half millionyears.
And if you are not already familiar with the story of the real Lunkwill, the real Fook, and Deep Thought -- the real computer with which they conversed, get toknow them all at the BBC Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (HHGTTG) Web site.Read More]

ZDNet UK has astory on the next great version of MySQL -- the single most widely used open source database today with(according to Evans Data Group) 40% of the market (Firebird has 39%, and PostgreSQL, 11%).
ZDNet UK spoke with David Axmark, one of MySQL's co-founders, who saidthat the next major version of the popular software -- which is alreadyavailable in a beta version -- includes supports things like storedprocedures, triggers and views. As Mr Axmark put it, "We're fixing 10years of criticism in one release." He is also quoted in the article assaying that he thinks this release might make MySQL an option for at leastten times as many users as before.Read More]
