Polish Euro2012 host cities from the Twitter perspective

The Euro championship 2012 in Poland and Ukraine has ended. On this blog we have created a lot of blog entries related to football, but this entry is different. This one is related to Polish host cities. From millions of tweets harvested during Euro we would like to squeeze out information what football fans say about Poland and Polish host cities. The infographics under consideration was created with the use of the Revolution R and IBM Netezza 1000 analytics suite. The full size version of the poster is available here.
Let’s have a look on selected part of this summary.
The pie chart (yes pie charts are bad in general, but here are quite useful). Areas of the pies are proportional to the fraction of tweets related to the particular category (accommodation / cost / people etc.) for each host city. The top figure presents fractions of tweets with positive sentiment while the bottom figure shows results for tweets with negative sentiment. Wrocław was acknowledge for accommodation, Poznan for people, Gdańsk for travel while Warsaw for organization.
The cumulative visibility / cumulative sentiment plots.
The visibility of Warsaw was much higher than other host cities. There were two times more tweets about the capital than other hosts. However the balance (#positive tweets – #negative tweets) is similar for all the host cities. In all four cases there were about three to four times more positive than negative tweets.
Like or not, sentiment scores in different languages.
The majority of tweets about host cities were written in English. However we observed a noticeable fraction of tweets in Spanish, Polish, Croatian, Swedish and Italian. In most languages there were more positive than negative tweets. Especially positive sentiment was reported in Spanish, Polish, Czech and Russian tweets about Wroclaw, Polish and Portugees tweets about Poznan, and Polish and Turkish tweets about Gdansk.
Cloud of words shows which words were more frequent in context of different hosts. Contemplate them for a few seconds and you will notice some interesting relations. “Municipal stadium” was mentioned frequently in tweets about Wroclaw, “irish fans” draw attention in tweets about Poznan. In Gdańsk many tweets refer to “Spain” or “Italy”.
