How to reduce meetings and influence people...
... to do the same. Problem: Ineffectual meetings. Meetings that take longer than they should. Too many meetings. Meetings that consistently sound like this five minute video... " The Conference Call " by David Grady. Solution(s): Don't go . No, really... hear me out on this. If meetings are ineffectual, then no one will look at you poorly for bowing out. I can assure you, if you think the meeting is ineffectual, your colleagues likely do too. Now, I don't mean "just don't go" (this isn't "Office... [More]

Helpful commands to check if the Ubuntu version installed is a server or desktop setup
Sometimes in our days as technical support we find the need to validate what type of OS install is on a machine as a way to identify the environment in which a product may be encountering difficulties. To help with that discovery, here are two commands we have found to check if an Ubuntu OS install is a server version or desktop setup: Command 1: root@ubuntu:/etc# dpkg -l ubuntu-desktop Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold |... Working Outside the Inbox: Those pesky status updates
You know the pain: You're on a team, likely in a support role covering the phones on shift work taking calls from clients. Or, perhaps you're on a project team, covering some critical piece of the puzzle, or waiting on a colleague to close out their piece so you can move forward... And your inboxes are bulging at the seams with both critical information as well as those "nice to know" status updates. In so many cases, we all find ourselves under this barrage of status update emails, FYIs, and other important, yet immediately... [More]

Common features used in the flexlm licensing options file
It's always good to have options! Let's discuss the options a license administrator has to use for a license. The options file is a plain text file that allows a floating license administrator to control user access to specific features or versions of licensed software. Users are identified by their username, hostname, IP address, or project. For concurrent (floating) licenses, the license administrator can: Allow the use of feature/increments Deny the use of feature/increments Reserve license ( restrict the number of license... [More]

(shared) knowledge is power
There are two kinds of knowledge - tacit and explicit. Tacit knowledge is the knowledge in your head. Knowledge you haven't shared. Explicit knowledge is knowledge written down and shared. Tacit knowledge is good, but explicit knowledge is better, particularly in a technical support context. In Rational Client Support, we've built a robust knowledge management program, based on knowledge-centered support best practices, aimed to equip the organization to capture knowledge effectively for reuse, not only internally, but outside the firewall as... License types and their functionality
Licenses and their types: What Is a License? A software license (or software licence in normal English & Commonwealth usage) is a legal instrument (usually by way of contract law) governing the usage or redistribution of software. All software is copyright protected, except material in the public domain. Contractual confidentiality is another way of protecting software. A typical software license grants an end-user permission to use one or more copies of software in ways where such a use would otherwise potentially constitute... [More]

Has it really been three years since Kelly started this blog? Indeed it has! May 14th, 2009 was an auspicious day, as we dipped our toes into the corporate blogging world to see how it'd go. Little did Kelly know that we'd soon soar to become the 5th most visited blog on developerWorks, or ever break that 2 million visitors milestone! By the by, we DID break that 2m milestone yesterday evening ! What wonderful serendipity for both to occur on the same day! Moving the work items to a different repository with history in RTC
One of the users using IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC) 4.0.1 were planning to move some work items to a different repository. To do this, they were considering the following options along with some requirements: a. Move the work items, preserving workitem ID and if possible history also. b. Export workitems to CSV file and then import it into other repository. Here is the information that should help users with similar queries: One can move the work items to a different project area, only in the same... [More]

Floating license usage report on Jazz Team Server.
Jazz team server has a detailed reporting mechanism for the floating license usage and these reports can be very helpful in managing the available floating licenses effectively. The reports give a picture of license consumption in a given time frame. This not only helps you to manage your licenses but also provides a big picture about your license requirements for a project. There are two ways to collect data about the license usage on a license server: * Historic usage snapshots - Data that tracks how many of each CAL were used concurrently... [More]

Modeling challenges with State chart using IBM Rational Rhapsody
IBM Rational Rhapsody family provides a collaborative design, development and test environment for systems engineers and software engineers. It uses Systems Modeling Language (SysML) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) to enable rapid requirements analysis and visual, model-based design. The UML diagrams are views into the underlying semantic system model; each kind of diagram emphasizes some aspect of the model. Example - Dynamic aspects is represented by behavior diagram - State chart. Statecharts define the behavior of objects by specifying... [More]

IBM Rational Jazz token license configuration on Jazz team server
IBM Rational Jazz token license configuration on Jazz team server Token based licensing is an option, along with floating and authorized user licensing, within the Rational portfolio. Technically, the basis of token licensing is on the traditional floating license mechanism and process. However, when it comes to how the license check out (consumption) works, it has a different behavior. In a token environment, each product consumes a predefined token value, not a predefined quantity as it does in a traditional floating licensing... [More]
