After installing IBM Rational Publishing Engine (RPE), if you get an error like this when you try to start it,
!MESSAGE Exception launching the Eclipse Platform:
you need to determine whether the problem is caused by corruption in the RPE configuration files or whether it the problem is with the installation itself.
First, see if the problem happens:
- if you log into the problem workstation as another user
- if you start RPE using "Run as administrator"
Both of the above will use different temporary configuration files. If the problem does not happen, that points to the configuration files and you can try removing the temporary directories RPE creates in your user profile to see if that resolves the problem, as described in Tech Note #1681124.
If the problem happens for multiple users on the problem workstation, that points to a problem with the installation itself, or possibly with security software that might be blocking RPE. Please check the workstation for security software that might be blocking RPE and ensure that this software is not configured to block it -- the easiest way is to try starting RPE with the security software temporarily disabled.
If the problem is not caused by security software, you can get more information about what is going wrong by starting RPE in debug mode by adding ' -debug -consolelog' to RPE's shortcut's Target after the last ". For example:
When you start RPE in debug mode, a command window with details about the startup sequence will pop up and you can use those details to get a better idea of what is going wrong. If the errors in that window show more problems loading Java classes, that indicates a problem with the installation itself, so the next thing to try is an RPE reinstall -- usually reinstalling RPE resolves this kind of problem. RPE needs to be installed as an administrator.
