Today I am happy to bring you our interview with Rob Weissman. Rob is the guy who helps us understand our business through metrics, so we can continually monitor, measure, and improve. He's also busy outside of work with a great program that we might have mentioned here before. Grab a cup of coffee, and say hi to Rob Weissman!
Tell us a little about yourself: who are you, what is your role in Rational Client Support? My name is Rob Weissman. I am a Sr. Business Analyst for the worldwide tech support organization within Rational.
How long have you been working for IBM and Rational?
started working for Rational in 2000 and have been with IBM since it
bought the brand in 2003.
What are you currently working on?
am currently working on bringing some of our reports into Cognos and
using Query Studio as a way to display data and allow users to query
on multiple variables.
Are you a gadget person? What type of gadgets do you use? \
would not consider myself a gadget person. Heck, I may have been the
last person to get a cell phone. The best "gadget" I have
is my iPod. I don't go anywhere without it. Crunching numbers all
day long requires good music!
What's the coolest piece of tech news you've heard lately?
just heard about new ways to give medicine that would not require
needles or pills. Pills have many side effects that could be
prevented with this new release mechanism. Also, since I fear
needles, I'm excited by this progress. Its too early to tell if this
will work, but I'm excited!
What is your favorite part of working for Rational Client Support?
flexibility and the people at Rational make it amazing. Without this
I would not have had the time to work with the visually impaired and
grow our program into one of the biggest in the country over the past
few years. The IBM On Demand Community has played a big part in
this. IBM and its employees donate millions of dollars every year to
so many organizations. I'm proud to be a part of this team!
What are you passionate about?
I love to win when I play ball. I love to win when I root for my
sports teams and I like to contribute to wins by providing
information to the management staff to help them drive decisions to
help Rational and its clients win.
How do you define success?
is when you have a goal that can be measured, and you meet or exceed
it. Success does not always equal winning, sometimes it is equal to
progress. You have to crawl before you can walk, and walk before you
In your spare time, if you have any, what hobbies or activities interest you?
spend a lot of my free time volunteering as the head coach of the
Boston Renegades. This is a team of visually impaired athletes
competing in an adaptive form of baseball for the blind. We practice
from March to August and travel around the country competing against
other teams. In 2010 we played in Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, New
York and Rochester, MN. It's an amazing opportunity to give visually
impaired people the chance to play a competitive team sport. We are
the only blind baseball team in all of New England. For more
information on the team and sport you can visit our web page
What is on your nightstand with regard to reading?
Sports page of the Boston Globe to keep up with the Patriots, James
Patterson novels for entertainment, Maclife to help with my personal
computing and IBM
Cognos 8 Business Intelligence to help me with work related projects
has been your biggest surprise you have witnessed in the technology
How small everything is getting. Geez, things are so small they are
now falling out of my pockets!
What is your favorite technology that fizzled or failed to live up to the hype?
Odyssey 2 video game system from 1978. I was so bummed that it lost
out to Atari! Yes, I just dated myself
What are you doing to make the planet smarter?
am trying to educate people about the skills of visually impaired
athletes and help break down some of the barriers that exist between
sighted and blind people
How are you using social networking today?
We created a Facebook page for our blind baseball team to share information and pictures with the players, volunteers, families and all of our fans across the world. It's been successful and we are close to have 850 fans! You can join us by going to our page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Boston-Renegades-Beep-Baseball/298440869803
