Introduction on renewals concepts:
Why you need to apply maintenance to a license file or need to renew a license (even when a license file says permanent), let's start with a software purchase:
When you purchase a product/software you will have a valid maintenance (date in the license file) for one year (license type will be permanent though), From the next year onwards, the license needs to be renewed in order to download the latest release of the software/product, So the renewal of license will entitle a user for support and the upgrade to the latest release (available) of the software.
For products using date based licensing version, you will see both the original license order plus any renewal order for that product. The License Key Center will list the Renewal Order as a separate line in your account. To apply this to your license key, select the Renewal Order and it will give you the licenses associated to choose from. You may then add the quantity of the renewal per product and regenerate the key. Note, only registered licenses show up in the list of licenses available for upgrades using the renewal order. Important! The Original License Order and the Associated Renewal Order have to be registered on the same IBM Site ID. To be able to apply the renewal order and upgrade the license keys the orders need to reside on the same License Key Center account ID which is the same as your IBM Site ID
How to apply maintenance to the licenses using Rational License Key Center:
To begin with, let us understand why we need to apply maintenance to the permanent license file.
A database license key has the Subscription and Support (S&S) end date or Maintenance End Date in built as the license key version. For example:
INCREMENT Change-Base telelogic 2011.1215 permanent 2 \
VENDOR_STRING=T10-999999:Admin ISSUED=01-Jan-2011 SIGN2="XXXX \
(example 2011.1215 = Dec 15, 2011 is the end date of your current S&S)
The license key can be used with any software version released before the end date of the in built license version (S&S end date). To be able to use any new release, the license key needs to be updated with new S&S orders for each period of renewal.
How to apply maintenance (S&S Renewal) to the existing license file:
Log in to IBM Rational License Key Center:
(User name and password required. If you do not remember the password, It can be regenerated by clicking on “forgot password” as shown in the above screen capture bottom left corner)
Click on "Get Keys" in the left navigation bar as shown below:
Select the Product for which maintenance or S&S renewal needs to be applied, lets say DOORS, then select the product and follow the instructions ahead.
If the licenses are already generated, then click on the respective S&S renewal link based on the renewal purchased or latest renewal available, check the box and click on
In the "Required Information" screen, ensure you check for the correct Hostname and Host ID:
Additional Information on how to get the hostname and the Host ID of a Microsoft Windows machine:
Click on Start -> run -> cmd
In the DOS prompt type VOL and hit return, this will give you the “Volume serial number”. This is the same as the “Disk Serial Number” or the Host ID,
Similarly, if you type HOSTNAME in the DOS prompt and hit return it will get you the machine name.
In the Usage Quantity, key in the number of the licenses that needs to be upgraded to the latest maintenance.
