influence: (ˈɪnflʊəns) — n. An effect of one person or thing on another resulting from ability, wealth, position, etc.
Here in Rational Support, we understand the deep value of influence and thought leadership. We work hard to make sure our experiences across the organization are captured and shared out to help all of our clients and other IBMers alike reuse and benefit from our collective knowledge. One of these ways is through our periodic "Top Content" posts which highlight the most reused support content in the prior month.
Identifying and quantifying the value of what we do, however, isn't quite as easy. This is something that we've touched on before, and something which is a huge trend in the 'social' industry today: measuring value. Recently I ran across this article from Wired Magazine discussing one of these ranking systems: Klout. In the closing of this article the author, Seth Stevenson, posits that while this tool is becoming more of a pivotal piece in the social spaces it is likely missing a key factor (or more) to really crack the nut of measuring influence and subsequently value. Seth makes an important note on his own anxieties and calling out what he has seen in terms of who the biggest score holders are: big names that appear caught in an echo chamber, versus those he finds truly interesting who tend to have lower scores across the board.
In Rational Support, we believe we've stayed away from that echo chamber effect in our social spaces, instead focusing in on the information that is critical and necessary for you, our clients, to be successful in your businesses. Sure, we may watch our Klout score with a little interest, but we don't let that drive how we do our jobs. Our core beliefs remain squarely client-first; even if that means our content isn't "viral", or provocative, or witty enough to catapult us into internet fame... we remain focused on you and getting the right information to you when you need it.
Given that influence is comprised of so many differing variables, both observable and intuitive, how would YOU quantify your influence? Last month the IBM Support Portal News And Alerts blog indicated that the IBM Support Portal R7 is coming soon. Well early last week that happened!
The IBM Support Portal has been updated in May based on your feedback!
Earlier last week, IBM significantly updated the IBM Support Portal with improvements to make this worldwide one-stop site for technical resources for all IBM products even more effective and useful for our clients. Some are adjustments our clients have requested, others are redesigns to improve our clients' efficiency in finding the information they need. Here's a quick rundown of new capabilities to look for.

“Quick start” page has been simplified, and users will notice a cleaner interface.

After users select the Version for a product, only supported operating systems are available for selection.
Find a Product - New “Products for <user name>” option
A new radio button titled "Products for <user name>" has been added and offers three choices: My AVP products, My inventories and My supported software.
My AVP Products
This option was previously located under the “Browse for product” section. If selected, it provides a list of products included in Accelerated Value Program contracts.

My supported software
This is a new option allows users to select products based on their list of supported software products registered in Service Request.
New Information Icons
Information icon for “My inventories”
From within the “My inventories” product list box, selecting the blue “i” (information) icon provides additional information about which inventory file (or files) contain that product.
Information icon for Serviceable Software Products
When a Serviceable Software Product appears in the "Find a product" selection list, the blue "i" (information) icon appears beside the offering name if the SSP is expandable.
Selecting the icon displays the list of products in the product offering.
Serviceable Software Products are collections of software products that share support content such as DB2 for z/OS which is a group of related tools.
Notification subscription enhancements
Signed in users can quickly subscribe to download and fix notifications in the "Downloads and fixes" and "Problem resolution" modules. (Click on the image to right for a larger image of this update.)
This feature provides the ability to subscribe to downloads and fixes for products the user is not currently subscribed in My notifications.
New social media tag display and search filtering
User defined social media tags previously were displayed on the search results page, but could not be searched by keyword or filtered from the search results page.
Users can now filter on social media tags when selecting "View All" or "More" results links within portlets. (Click on the image to right for a larger image of this update.)
Clicking on the tag will search for other documents that contain the tag. Up to five user-defined tags will display on filtered results list.
To remove a tag from the filtered list, select the [x] beside the search tag for the "x" beside "Remove all".

Has it really been three years since Kelly started this blog? Indeed it has! May 14th, 2009 was an auspicious day, as we dipped our toes into the corporate blogging world to see how it'd go. Little did Kelly know that we'd soon soar to become the 5th most visited blog on developerWorks, or ever break that 2 million visitors milestone! By the by, we DID break that 2m milestone yesterday evening! What wonderful serendipity for both to occur on the same day!
Sure, we may be a bit long in the tooth to be celebrating a birthday, but if you've hung around here for any amount of time you know we're kids at heart and surely you won't begrudge us a little celebration... right?
Ok, you're right... I can't post here without providing SOME sort of deeper value. So, as a bit of a small retrospective we thought it would be neat to go through and highlight some of our past posts. As we discussed which to highlight, we thought about giving visibility to the "Most Viewed" posts on this blog, but figured if they are the most viewed already, they probably don't need the help So we figured we'd go back through the archives of 715+ posts and pull out some of those 'sleepers'; the ones with some solid content but which may have gone far under the radar based on our analysis of activity metrics.
