A look back at 2012

It's the start of a new year which is a good time to look back on the last year's activities. Hopefully you had a chance to take a break and recharge for 2013. In 2012, Rational delivered significant updates to the capabilities needed for multi-platform development. For this entry, I am going to recap the enhancements for just a few of the products. Starting with Rational Team Concert, we delivered multiple updates full of customer driven enhancements. These enhancements were across the board for developers of any platform as well as some very targeted enhancements for IBM i and z/OS development. IBM i now has the same dependency based build that was only available for z/OS. Both platforms improved the useably for their deployment capabilities. Rational Development and Test Environments for System z (RD&T), formally known as Rational Developer for System z Unit Test Feature, not only has a new name, but stands on its own, no longer requiring the Rational Developer for System z. The license term changes as well as the support for a server hosted USB key made RD&T available for more customer use cases including training and Continuous Integration Testing.
Totally new in the year was the IBM Continuous Integration Solution for System z. Continuous Integration is nothing new, but it has not been a focus for System z development. RD&T offers a solution for testing z/OS based applications with a near zero relative cost. Organizations can provide for automated build verification testing, as well as other automated testing for new function. With that kind of automated testing, System z can now be included in the Continuous Integration plans for any organization. Last but certainly not least, we have the enhancements provided by Rational Developer for System z (RDz). RDz continues to improve performance and performance at scale, as well as addressing many customer specific requirements. 2012 saw the introduction of an automated framework for z/OS unit testing called zUnit. This new capability, modeled on JUnit, allows z/OS developers to create their unit tests that can then be run by the developer themselves and then turned over to be automated as part of a build verification test as mentioned earlier. zUnit was just one of the major new areas addressed by RDz. RDz also now provides comprehensive code validation rules for COBOL and PL/I. These major new areas in addition to a number of other enhancements to existing function provide a significant step forward for the z/OS developer.
