we are going install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on IBM Power System using Serial Cable. Let start the installation step by step. We can find out the Serial Port in the rear-view of S822L, as below.
We need a USB to Serial Cable (as below) to connect at Serial Port of the S822L. I am going to use my Laptop which is running on RHEL 7.2. I have plugged the cable & establish the connectivity between my laptop & the S822L.
Now, I need to verify the serial device from my laptop. Here I run dmesg command to check, whether any new device dected by my laptop or not.
I saw my laptop OS have detected ttyUSB0 as a serial connectivity.
I need to configure putty serial session configuration to connect at the at Serial Port of the S822L , as below:
Click Open button and press enter key on the new putty window. We will see the below screen, if our serial connection is working fine.
Its a ASMI interface and need to login as admin/admin (default username and associate password). we need to power on the system (Press #1 >>> Press #1 >>> Press #7), once we got the access to the ASMI menu.
It will logged out from ASMI interface and start booting, as above figure.
Now, we need set the display, accept licence agreement etc. after that we can set the boot device via SMS menu and install our operation system on the system.
We have set the boot device as the DVD and boot using RHEL 7.3 LE OS DVD. Now we are going to install RHEL 7.3 on the Power System. Here is the RHEL7.3 Text Mode Installation window, and we have to configure the required (See as (!) ) option, and press b to begin installation.
I am not going to continue the entire installation activity. Hope this document will help you to use the serial cable to do the installation of the Operation System on the S822l Box.
