On Tuesday July 1st, the WebSphere Integration User Group UK (WIUGUK) were in Hursley House for their annual meeting there. However, this meeting was a little different from the usual event that runs each year. This was the 50th meeting of the WebSphere Integration User Group which started life as the MQSeries User Group. This 50th meeting was run in collaboration with the MQ department in Hursley to put on two additional tracks of detailed MQ material along with the usual 4 tracks that the User Group runs. On this 50th meeting it was great to see the User Group also going back to its roots. With the very recent MQ V8 announcement and GA, there was a lot of MQ V8 material available for the attendees to choose from.
After an initial welcome from Mike Wyvil, the User Group President, which reminded us of various events coming later in the year, the user group kicked off in the morning with a keynote presentation from Ben Mann, Cross Portfolio Manager from IBM Hursley, on the subject, "Being a Composable Enterprise". This years user group was so well supported, with the maximum of 140 registered attendees, not everyone could be accommodated in the Hursley House Auditorium for the keynote, so a second alternate keynote session was run at the same time with Morag Hughson, MQ Product Architect, presenting "What's New in MQ V8".
After a coffee break we then moved into the breakout sessions and the user group offered four tracks of materials:-
Business Process Management
Cloud / Mobile / API Management
Plus the incorporated MQ Technical Conference added two additional tracks all about MQ with lots of V8 content.
Although this was two conferences run together, attendees were completely free to move across the tracks attending any sessions from either the User Group or the MQ Technical Conference that peaked their interest.
Lunch was served after the first of the four breakout sessions, and then there was a surprise for all the attendees. This 50th WebSphere Integration User Group meeting deserved to be celebrated in style, so there was a cake to be cut and all the attendees could have a slice. Mike Wyvil, the User Group President did the honours to cut the cake to a great cheer from the onlookers.
Lunchtime; 50th Meeting celebratory cake; Mike cuts the cake!
After lunch, it was back to the serious business of technical education and the next three breakout sessions. I think a number of slices of cake disappeared into the breakout session rooms at the end of the lunch break.
Having been split into six distinct tracks through the day, the conference came together to finish with an Ask the Experts panel before closing and heading for a drink in the sunshine at the Hursley Clubhouse.
We'd like to thank all the speakers and attendees for supporting the event. You make it what it is - a great educational and networking event.
