I have been persuaded by both the blog postings and other people internal to IBM that the Notes selection model has merit in its separation of selection and focus. Therefore, the plan for selection and focus is as follows:
1. As Jeff Eisen did announce at Lotusphere 2006, the default for the Hannover release of Lotus Notes will be to use the same selection (and focus) model as the operating system on which it runs.
2. We will offer as a user preference the ability to revert to the Notes selection model in its entirety. We did discuss other ways to show focus to see if we could avoid some of the usability issues that I brough up yesterday. As one responder mentioned, we could use a caret at the beginning of the row (you know, like some debuggers we've all seen, and like gmail does), but we are trying really hard to minimize the number of columns in the views.
