My colleague and friend Irv Lustig argues that what I call the expert way is covered by INFORMS proposed definition. He goes as follow. Solving a problem using mathematical optimization is a scientific process, it consumes data to provide insight (mathematical solution), and this insight can be used to make better decisions.
