I had the honor to be invited to give a talk by the Or Complete group on a topic of my choice during a Google Plus hangout. I decided to speak about lessons learned when selling optimization to business users. Readers of this blog won't be surprised, as this is what this blog is about. Slides are available on slideshare Slide show plus voice recording is available on youtube thanks to OR complete team. Note that I had a flu, hence my voice is not my usual one, and the flow is very slow...
I covered some topics already covered in this blog, plus few additional ones. It triggered interesting discussions during the event, as well as subsequent ones on various social media, including this one on LinkedIn. I'll certainly leverage these discussions in subsequent posts!
What seemed to interest the most was the acceptance topic. What makes it difficult for people to use optimization given it can provide such extraordinary return on investment? Resistance to change in general is probably key, but there is more to it as various readers or listeners pointed out. I'll come back to this topic and others, but readers can already read this interesting post by Paul Rubin on related topics.
Let me thank the OR complete group for organizing this event. I also was very interested by reactions and questions, both during the event, and during subsequent discussions on social media. I never used Google Plus hangouts before, but they look like a nice way to host webinars and discussions. We had logistics issues because my microphone wasn't working properly, but we managed to get the event rolling thanks to the help of many participants!
