Web Services in the Middle

In the midst of following along with Bob Sutor's luggage adventures, I missed his post on the Enterprise Service Bus. His post, along with Don Ferguson's post in response to Adam Bosworth and my recent conversation with Bobby Woolf regarding UDDI all point to a specific trend that places Web services and SOA squarely in the middle.... Middleware that is. The majority of WS-* specs and the adoption trends of Web services technologies are demonstrating that the rightful place for SOAP, etc is in building extensible, integratable middleware and backend integration solutions. This is not particularly surprising, of course, but it does run a bit counter to the SOAP Web Services Everywhere mantra; that is, alternative SOA design strategies such as the REST architecture may very well be better for some things on the front-end application layer.
